New shehata oud

SamirCanada - 1-9-2008 at 05:30 PM

Hello fellas yes indeed I indulged once again and Iam most pleased i did!
I have a new oud made by maurice shehata.
I will let the pictures do the talking as this one is simply a beuty.

Thank you Mike once again for helping me get such a nice instrument. I so happy with the way it sounds and looks pass my compliments on to Maurice.

I have it strung with the help of Jameel to achieve an old school sound.
the C FF AA strings and woud copper of the turkish set but tuned to arabic tension.

the dd gg cc strings are nylgut.
* I am using the nylgut gg string from the regular tension arabic set as a dd string
it gives a really smooth sound.

here is a pic of Maurice about to mount the face.

here is a pic taken with my low quality cell phone camera.
sorry that is all i got these days.

the rosettes are bone and the face is cedar

SamirCanada - 1-9-2008 at 05:35 PM

here is a shot of the back.
its ebony (african black wood)
with mop diamond shaped peices between some ribs.

Sound Sample

I swore to Mike when I was in california that i would learn to play toota from Farid from start to finish.
I saved it to play with this oud.
thanks

unfortunately its highly compressed but it has no effects whatsoever.
dam that oud sound good..!!

Greg - 1-9-2008 at 07:23 PM

Alf mabrouk Samir.

This is a great looking and sounding oud from Mourice.
The case lining is also very spiffy.

I think you would win the prize for the most improved player on Mike's forums. I have a couple of files of you playing a couple of years back and you wouldn't think it was the same guy. Congratulations.

Play your new oud in good health.

Regards,

Greg

Samir,

Alf Mabrook my friend! This is one awesome oud. Looks and sounds great. Are you still rocking that pellisander oud? How do the sounds compare? I've considered getting a full ebony oud from Shehata for sometime now.

Looks and sounds great my friend. I love those accents on the bowl

dubai244 - 1-9-2008 at 09:14 PM

Hi samir,

Alf Mabrouk. Great Oud and very nice sound and very good playing.

Thanks

SamirCanada - 1-9-2008 at 10:21 PM

Thank you everyone.
I was very exited for this oud and it turned out perfect.

Thank you Greg I feel i did a lot of progress its true but it was 100% due to the support of this wonderfull family. I am a product of the Mikeouds.com school start to finish. I actualy didnt take any classes exept from the advice i got from here. but definately playing with the band i joined for the last year as been a big plus in keeping up with playing.

Adnan: i still have the palissander oud of course.
there different in many way though so its realy hard to compare. the new one is all ready full sounding and has a deeper more growling basse. hard to describe but I could make samples in the future for you to here the difference. the cedar face may have a huge thing to do with it also the dd nylgut is really neat once it settles in (3 weeks)

Jason: thank you budday. hope your doing good.

Dubai: thank you very much, this means a lot comming from such a good player like you.

Hey Samir - this is a real beauty, you have a real nice taste, alf mabrouk. I'm expecting myself :) so hopefully that wont be too far away. Very neat oud, do you find that it's slightly on the heavier side? considering the ebony body, and some of the posts concerning ebony ouds.

Melbourne - 1-10-2008 at 03:59 AM

Oh I forgot to ask what material the rosettes are made from...is it bone?

Cheers Samir

Jameel - 1-10-2008 at 06:24 AM

Very Nice Samir!

Mike - 1-10-2008 at 08:22 AM

Congrats Samir Bey...beautiful oud and beautiful playing bud. Way to go with Toota!

MatthewW - 1-10-2008 at 08:41 AM

Alf Mabrouk Samir. Lovely looking oud- that ebony bowl is just delicious. is it much heavier than other woods? May it bring you much happiness!

SamirCanada - 1-10-2008 at 09:00 AM

I find the oud to be slightly heavier then my other palissander one when i hold them in each hand, but it is made with a thicker neck and it has that spray on finish instead of french polish which also might be a factor.

now does that more heavy feel take away from the oud. I dont think so at all. the oud is well balanced so when playing it the weight difference is not noticeable at all. It feels very alive against my chest when I play it. It is not straining or nothing like that when playing for a long time.
I feel like I am holding the real deal which i am of course. ;)

SamirCanada - 1-10-2008 at 09:01 AM

Melbourne: the rosettes are bone yup.

gilgamesh - 1-11-2008 at 02:33 AM

Mabrouk ya Samoura . You must be the happiest man with this jewel and this play;If you lack of a heir, think to me!!("sigh"). It's rightly celebrated with this nice toota.

Lazzaro - 1-14-2008 at 05:23 AM

Alf mabrouk for your new wonderfull oud. In my last trip in Egypt I bought an other Shehata oud with cedar face, which sound I like a lot. Maurice told me that cedar top gives a more traditional sound. What do you think about it.
Thanks ciao Maurizio

SamirCanada - 1-14-2008 at 07:12 AM

ouhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
thats very nice!
thanks for that picture Maurizio
that is a beautiful simple oud.
I tell you, i like the simple look a lot
Congradulations
can we hear it?

by the way I think Cedar has a really nice sound mature sound from the beginning. Spruce can sound better but it needs time to become aged.

Lazzaro - 1-14-2008 at 07:26 AM

Thanks for your information, my friend Agostino Quaresima (a good liuther) told me the same. I feel this cedar top oud more friendly, warm and with immediate respons. As soon as possible I record something with his oud.
ciao Maurizio

Jason - 1-14-2008 at 10:32 AM

wow Lazzaro I really really like that oud. I'd kind of like to have a nice fixed bridge oud. Maybe I'll have a Shehata in my future too :D

paulO - 1-14-2008 at 05:40 PM

Hi Samir,

Old school sound indeed -- super woody and sweet sounding, and some really fantastic bass response. It really does sound like a much older instrument..amazing. Very classy looking of course ! Enjoy it in good health.

Regards..PaulO

gilgamesh - 1-14-2008 at 06:10 PM

Ciao Lazzaro. Your new baby looks very good and I imagine easily that it's sound very "roots"! Halou awy awy awy!Mabrouk. Now you can open a little Shehata office:buttrock:

Awesome looking Oud, amazing sound and excellent playing.

I look forward to enjoying more of your posts!!

SamirCanada - 6-4-2008 at 10:22 AM

I put up a video with this oud last week. It was to help a fellow oudist with his right hand but you get an idea of the sound now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55X-gYk_Fek

the sound is great... soo deep.

Abusaid - 6-4-2008 at 11:35 AM

Wow Samir, your ebony and cedar oud is really beautifull, very sharqi style, mabrook.

About your taksim, the sound is great and also your playing, I really like your old style touch (when I listen you, I think in Omar Nakashbandy or George Michel). Alf mabrook ya Samir.

SamirCanada - 6-4-2008 at 12:21 PM

Thanks AbuSaid,
I really don't compare to them but I will take the compliment since they are all time idols of mine.
hope to hear yours soon!.

Christian1095 - 6-5-2008 at 06:42 AM

Hey Samir, what is written in the rosette?

Also, I really like the doves....

And thanks again for the right hand video....

SamirCanada - 6-5-2008 at 06:48 AM

Actually its a good question.

Meeka... could you find out more about the calligraphy Maurice uses?
