Munir Bashir 3 disc set

DaveH - 1-29-2008 at 06:59 AM

Hello all

A 3 disc inedit set is available in the UK soon, called "Maitre du luth arabe" and including previously released material - the Paris concert, and 2 discs entitled "maqamat and "meditations".

I'm thinking of buying it. I already have the Paris CD which I think is wonderful, but there's a lot of poor quality recordings and previously released stuff which comes out under Bashir's name. Does anyone have the other two and if so, can you recommend them?

Cheers

Oh, and sorry for posting in the wrong forum!

Hi Dave, I do not have the above but have "The Budapest concert" "Raga roots" & "Flamenco roots", all superb. I have just ordered "The Stockholme recordings".I would find it hard to believe there is a Munir Bashir recording that is not worth having. Regards, Charlie.

hi DaveH
"maqamat" is really beautiful, is my favourite with "the art of oud" by ocora (always france production), the recording is deep and clean, without too long reverbs like in "mesopotamia"
ale.

To bad that the Stockholm recordings is missing the first recording and world premier of Maqam Bashiri! A very inspired improvisation and not so composed as the later recording is.

Thanks all for your comments. Charlieoud, I wasn't casting doubt on the quality of playing!! - just the production, particularly of some of these recordings that have been released posthumously (like "mesopotamia" which Corriodoio mentions). Ronny, does that mean you have the Bashiri premier? You are a good man to know! I'm off to Amazon!

Cheers

Yes Dave, I have it on tape with some other recordings the Swedish Radio did with Bashir 20-30 years ago.

...and Corriodoio, I too don't understand why the only recording companies that do oud outside of the arab world seem to be french. Vive la francophonie! The Occora recording is superb. Charlie I would highly recommend you adding that to your burgeoning collection.

Hello Dave;
i have both of the above mentioned CD's. They are among my favorite's (just as like all Bashir's!). The sound quality is good, they are a valuable addition to any musical library, i think. Not to be missed.

Dave, I know you were not doubting the playing. My reply was not particularly helpful. Thanks for the recommendation. Bashir inspires me so much. Charlie.

I'm with you there Charlie. Ronny, what's the copyright status on that recording? See what I'm driving at?

Ronny Andersson - 1-31-2008 at 11:12 AM

Dave, it is not possible to share them on the web but I transferred the old tapes to my pc ;)
Recently I came across two interesting LP's from the Arabesque series from 1972 and 1973. One with Munir Bashir and the other one by his brother Jameel! Recorded in Germany and Irak.

Too bad Ronny. I'll keep a look out for the LPs though - I have some good 2nd hand contacts.
