Nice, Matthias. Can we see the rest of this oud?

Matthias - 2-9-2008 at 11:42 AM

Hello Jameel,

here is a front pic. Unfortunately I lost the one from the back. Hope to meet the owner again soon again to take it.

This is true GENIUS AND ARTISTRY. Makes our modern laser etched rosettes seem rather mundane... THANK YOU for posting these!

Dr. Oud - 2-12-2008 at 06:02 PM

What makes the laser cut roses mundane is their machined accuracy and perfect symmetry.. Hand made roses are imperfect, and are inherently a work of art, rather than a machined piece part. While machines can produce accuracy, they don't convey any emotion, imparted by the builder/maker/craftsman/ artist into his work. Consider me a Luddite (look it up!) but I prefer the imperfect artistry of a highly skilled craftsman to the precise output of a machine made rose.

All of these pictures are just gorgeous, thanks for organizing them into one spot for us!

One thing though, I have to say that the diamond shaped inlays around the sound hole that Matthias posted blow me away. They line up exactly, even the thinnest little lines. Really impressive what craftsmanship and patience can produce, I'm always in awe of it.

Related to your comments on the laser cut rosettes, when I was in Egypt with Mike I remember a very funny thing from the Cairo museum. We were walking all around, taking in the amazing chiseled hieroglyphics on all sorts of stone monuments and the like. Under one truly spectacular example of perfectly hand carved images, absolutely in perfect alignment, was a printed sign misspelled, saying something like: "Do Net Touch". I know it's not exactly the same thing, and we were in Cairo, not London, but still, there's really something to be said about true artistic craftsmanship that with simple tools, talent and patience can produce the most amazing works of art.

Thanks,

mavrothis
