Hm, I am a cobza player myself, this is definitely not a cobza... cobza is way smaller, neck is shorter. Also it sounds/looks like the strings are
nylon and cobza uses bouzouki-like, octaved steel strings.
It's more like a hybrid super-barbat, almost (the neck is pretty long, eh?) Or some weird saz/buzuk-oud morph thingnouphar - 4-20-2008 at 05:27 AM
Wow, it's an instrument between a saz, an oud and a lavta...
Interesting genre, it sounds very gypsy.arsene - 4-20-2008 at 08:02 AM
yeah, it's an example of the (modern) "Manele"-genre in Romania... Comparable genres in the Balkans are chalga (bulgaria) & turbo-folk (serbia
a.o.)
Manele is basically gypsy/folk music with a beat, and on one hand there's songs that lean heavily on traditional Romanian music, on the other hand
there's songs like these, which are heavily influenced by Middle Eastern pop (oftentimes they blatantly copy songs, see: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Idwa7gLLi7Q (Romanian version of Fadel Shakr's ya ghayeb, there's also a Greek, Turkish and Hebrew version...)
Most 'well-educated' people reject this "new" form of music and in a way, they have a point, as it is often poorly produced, contains vulgar lyrics
etc...
I for one think that some of these songs are in fact quite good and if someone would take the time and effort to properly produce and market this
music... who knows... Like what is happening now with Balkan Beats for example.Andy - 4-28-2008 at 05:37 PM
A short neck saz with 7 strings sounds a like a saz too. Nice sound and nice music.pirsultan - 4-29-2008 at 04:17 PM
It's not a saz. Unlike the saz this instrument appears to have strings fixed on the bridge and to be fretless. It also has the bent back pegbox
charactistic of short necked lutes like the ud and cobza. Doesn't sound much like a saz to me, other than an electro and you can make any amplified
stringed instrument sound like that. Certainly not played like a saz.rebetostar - 4-29-2008 at 05:06 PM
Could it be a type of tanbour? There may be tied frets, it's hard to tell..
Macedonia has a similar type of thing.
