Essential Oud Recordings

mahaprana - 4-20-2004 at 04:32 PM

Hi All,

I wanted to ask you all what you think are the best of the best of available oud recordings out there? If you were to pick 5 oud recordings that you couldn't live without what would they be? If this topic has been addressed before sorry in advance for the repeat.

I have to agree with sydney on that one. That CD describes so much of what oud playing is to me. I believe maqam.com still has some in stock. The link to the CD is:

http://www.maqam.com/cgi-bin/cdtest.cgi?category1=AfifTaian

Also, I'd add in any Farid el-Atrache takassim CD.

Thanks for the tip on the CD. I'll order it from Makam pronto.

I've been listening to an old tape that a friend made me of a Syrian oud player named Omar Naqichbendi. I had never heard of him before. It's really good!

So, what's up with Naseer Shamma's Cds being impossible to find? I also hear that he has several cassettes. Does anyone have these? His playing is wonderful but being in the record business I know one fact...you can't sell records if people can't find them. I'd love to get my hands on his first CD and on the one that has "moon" in the title. Anyone know how?

One of my favourite oud CDs is one I don't have - Riad al-Sunbati's Taqaseem Oud (I've heard all the tracks on it, though). Apparently it's quite hard to get hold of.

Hi

I have it but only on cassette!

Jameel has Sunbati's taqseems and many songs on his site to download:

Thanks for that, Richard (and Jameel). I like Sunbati's taqseems.

What about Bacanos Cd from Kalan?Udi Hrant? These 2 Cds are like Bible for me.

Turkish Tradition

LeeVaris - 4-21-2004 at 04:19 PM

I would add to the list - Münir Nurettin Beken, The Art of the Turkish Ud

This album is essential because Dr Beken looks back to playing styles that pre-date Bacanos and Hrant as well as forward to modern compositions that stretch the technical limits of the oud.

The CD is on Rounder CD 1135 – excellent sound quality!

BTW, anyone know what oud Dr. Beken plays... Manol? It sounds fantastic.
