Nylgut Superlights

Sazi - 7-20-2008 at 05:04 PM

Hi all, just thought I'd wax all enthusiastic like about my new Superlight Nylgut strings from Mimmo at Aquila, I had trouble finding light enough strings that still felt and sounded good, ( I use a bashir style oud with Iraqi tuning, - not a standard set) so I asked Mimmo for help and he put together a beautiful set for me, quite different to what I'm used to as the 4th course is fairly thick plain NG instead of thin wound, and sounded and felt terrible at first but after settling in tune I have to say they must be the very best strings I have ever tried! Beautiful tone and great feel, and stable as. Big up to Mimmo.;)

Hi Sazi,
would you please write the gauges for every string? I'm interested in this kind of set too.
Thanks, Giuseppe.

No worries mate, here they are,

F - 165D, C - 108D, d - 97 NG, g - 73 NG, c - 56 NG, f - 46 NG.

Hope this helps a few people "out there"

Hello Sazi,

the strings mimmo put togather for you are the standart lute strings. I recalculated the tension ( assuming you have a 60 cm string length - am I right? ) My result was a tension of 29 Newton from c - F and 32 for the high f. It is interesting, that this really superlight tension works on a floating bridge. Normally I use the standart low or high tension sets on my Munir Bashir model that I made.

By the way, I have all these strings on stock and can send it to everyone very quickly who wants them too. Furthermore I have the Aquila standard aoud sets too on stock.

Regards matthias

Thanks Matthius, I originally wanted the strings for a 57 cm oud that has quite a thin soundboard and very light bracing, that oud is unfortunately "out of service" at the moment so I put the strings on another 57 cm oud that I have which is much stronger, the tension is a little low on the bass F, and the instrument does feel like it could take higher tension, but the balance and tone are there, and I can also tune up a bit like Naseer Shamma on "Le luth de Baghdad" (somewhere around F#) with great feel and tone. One question if I may... you mention 29 & 32 Newton - what is usual tension for floating bridge ouds? Cheers, S
