UK Oud meet No 2

DaveH - 2-8-2009 at 05:58 AM

Where, when and who's up for it?

I think Awad's still in his kitchen and might not be venturing as far as the hall till spring. I would suggest June. May's not good for me but I could also do April if others preferred.

I could also offer a venue if people want to make the schlep down to Oxford, but we're not that close to a train station.

Suggestions?

Kelly - 2-8-2009 at 08:52 AM

Hi Dave

Yes I'm up for it ! anywhere in 150 mile radius from Sunny Manchester . April onwards. As you say the hall in Hulme might not be ready yet. It was a good location with plenty of space yet it might be good to move about to give everyone the opportunity to attend.

Anymore for anymore!

See you all soon.

charlie oud - 2-8-2009 at 11:11 AM

Crack on team!!!, Mid May not good for me, nor last weekend in June but all else clear so far. Lets make it happen again. C :bounce:

Ararat66 - 2-8-2009 at 11:40 AM

Here we go folks:D

June is good for me - Oxford would be great, easy for me to drive to, Manchester, I'd have to kip outside in Kelly's coal bunker again;) serves me right for getting high on the shisha :applause: ... Manchester would be fine too - so long as I can plan ahead.

All the best, can't wait to see you al again:airguitar:

Leon

abusin - 2-9-2009 at 03:52 AM

Hi folks,

Dave no worries, by sping time I'll b out of kitchen hibernation:))
OK guys, yes the hall is not ready yet so yes June, Oxford is fine with me so keep us posted and will hopefully be there.
Let's hope we get more people this time:bounce:

Cheers,

DaveH - 2-9-2009 at 09:21 AM

I'd be honoured to host, but am just a bit worried if the centre of oud gravity is in Manchester that it's going to be too hard for you guys. Still, if you fancy a change of scene this time, game on.

We have a spare room (possibly 2 by then) and a large but quite hard floor for playing and sleeping. The coal bunker will be reserved for leon, just in case he can't get back to Portsmouth but you'll have to bring your own shisha.

General consensus seems to be June. Just for the sake of suggesting a date and getting it firmed up, how does the 20th sound?

There was talk of a "star guest" - JT was mentioned and I seem to remember he said there was an outside chance he might be in the country - you out there JT? If you make it, the bedroom will be reserved for you and we'll see what we can do about a star nameplate!

Also mentioned I think was Ehsan Emam, who's only about an hour down the M40. If JT is unavailable I could try and contact Ehsan.

Ararat66 - 2-9-2009 at 11:41 AM

JT will be in Paris till April 19th - then I'm not sure, so he may not be around in June. June would be great for me by the way.

Cheers

Leon

Kelly - 2-9-2009 at 11:44 AM

Hi Dave. That sounds good if you are willing to host and with support. Which bit of Oxford are you near? I have a large tent if you have a 15'x8' patch of level ground or can find a field. Maybe we could warm up the site for Cropredy! Open air shisha not a problem- we just need stabling for the ouds.

How are other people fixed?

DaveH - 2-9-2009 at 12:18 PM

Fields we CAN do, Kelly!

We're just east of Oxford (Horspath), close to the M40 in a converted barn. Should work well (but don't tell the Cropredy folks or they'll all be here).

Ararat66 - 2-9-2009 at 12:51 PM

Woooaaah ...

... this is brewing up to be a good one folks:xtreme:

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 2-9-2009 at 12:53 PM

Hey Oud gang (heh, thats funny to imagine isn't it? :D ) I'm looking forward to the next meeting. I liked the previous location in Manchester, but of course we need to give the other Oudists in the other parts of the UK a chance. I guess I'll just have to get lost all over again. ;)

Can do June and any other date, except end of July through to August. I'll be away at that time, visiting my mothers side of the family in Belarus (any heard of it? )

It would be great if we could get JT, as it would be an honour to meet him!!! :D Anyway, see you all soon, can't wait...

cjmichael - 2-9-2009 at 01:05 PM

Oh man, if this ends up being sometime in late April I may be able to make it. I'm going to spend a couple of weeks in London to visit my family. I'll be staying at the home of my Uncle in Cheam, Surrey. If not, oh well. Still something to get excited about.

Kelly - 2-9-2009 at 01:14 PM

Hi |Owain

Maybe we could jump in a microbus, put surfboards and ouds on top!!?................. seriously. I would be happy to give a lift from Manchester or from a station on the way. Anything is possible. we could have quite a coach party from the north.

Anybody from the east?

Owain-Hawk - 2-9-2009 at 01:25 PM

Sounds good Kelly. But can you play taqsim while you drive.. that is the question. :airguitar: But yeah, its very kind of you to offer, thanks... we'll see what happens.

charlie oud - 2-10-2009 at 11:32 AM

Hey Dave, Whats your nearest rail station?, and thanks for offering us a choice of venue. Oxford or Manchester ok by me. Perhaps we should wait and see how many commit to attend and where they are coming from. It would be a bit daft for the majority to travel the furthest. Manchester was a huge success last year with a fine reception from the locals including the community centre staff who also enjoyed the meet. 6th, 13th or 20th June are fine by me.
C J michael's post in this thread reminds me that we should make it clear that all are welcome from anywhere in the World if they can make it to the U.K.
Also if we are to meet in June thats not that far away so keep posting folks!!!!

re UK oud meet

Michael - 2-10-2009 at 01:03 PM

Hi

I'm not a regular poster on this board, tho' I have been a member for ages.

I missed the Manchester meet, due to not reading this board regularly enough. Have learnt my lesson and check it a bit more regularly now.

I'm in Bristol and Oxford would be great for me. Any time is good for me this summer, so June would suit fine.

Michael

Owain-Hawk - 2-10-2009 at 01:09 PM

Welcome aboard Michael, I hope we'll see you at the next meet. :airguitar:

DaveH - 2-12-2009 at 04:19 AM

So let's provisionally fix 20th June in Oxford.

I say provisionally for two reasons. Firstly, because we may need a bit of wiggle room for a star guest. If JT can make it but only in April, it would probably be worth bringing it forward - maybe that would work for CJ as well. Awad, ... our leader, ... you're also an essential feature, so we need to make sure the dates suit you.

Secondly, we're still mostly north of Birmingham, so if the majority would rather go that way, we can rethink. No word yet from Charlie in Newcastle.

I'll send JT a U2U as he might not see this thread.

Owain-Hawk - 2-12-2009 at 04:26 AM

Dave, Charlie has said he is coming... look three posts up. ;)

And I agree with you Charlie, I really loved the reception from the locals last time!

DaveH - 2-12-2009 at 04:45 AM

Oops, sorry Charlie and thanks Owain.

Agree re flexibility.

Nearest station is either Oxford or a little place called Haddenham and Thame Parkway, on the Chiltern line which you can get to from Birmingham Moor Street (short walk from New Street). Think of Carrie Grant getting off the bus in the Nebraska cornfields in North by North West and you'll get the general idea.

Also agree with Charlie, all forners definitely welcome.

DaveH - 2-12-2009 at 04:51 AM

Actually, thinking about Kelly's festival references, if we're going for the camping option, the thread name should be changed to Oudstock.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

charlie oud - 2-14-2009 at 08:12 AM

Nice one Dave :applause::D.

Hey Kelly do you think we can get Michael Moussa on board again this year. Great if so. I have a feeling I will buy an oud from him as soon as I have the cash. I wonder if he still has that one he bought along last year?.

Kelly - 2-14-2009 at 08:41 AM

Hi Dave

I'll see we can arrange the weather for the 20th too!

Meanwhile I'm seeing Awad this Sunday so I'll see if his Oxford connections are ok for some Sudanese muwashshahat.

DaveH - 2-15-2009 at 01:52 PM

Yes please!!! We may have another very illustrious guest too but lets see...

Blessings overdose

DaveH - 2-18-2009 at 06:01 AM

So the good news is JT is keen. I'm a bit of an internet luddite and try to avoid smilies, but :xtreme:

The even better news (there is no bad!) is that Nizar Rohana also sent me a U2U saying he would potentially be interested too, which is even more thrilling. Thanks for getting in touch Nizar :xtreme::xtreme:

Only problem is, they're both available at different times - JT end March/early April, which would fit with one of the options we originally discussed; and Nizar from May, which would fit with the June date.

JT just requested we cover his ticket from Paris, which I think is fair enough, and not huge split between all of us. He could also do and a more formal workshop (he's too modest to use the word masterclass) as opposed to just a jam session, for a small charge. (EDIT: he can also do individual lessons)

So, we have the possibility of sharing with and learning from two fantastic musicians. I know time is going to be a factor in how we organise this, so what do you all think? Call me greedy, but I'd consider going for two meetings and I'd still be willing to host one or both, depending on everyone's ability to get here versus somewhere else. Just one logistical factor though is that if the maestros are taking the Eurostar, it would be easier for them to get here than further up North (I'm an hour from London). If they fly, Manchester would be perfectly feasible. I checked out a venue I know in London which is supposed to be reasonable, but we'd be looking at £250 for a day which, even split between us, starts to add up so I think that might be out. I'm reluctant to miss either of these opportunities.

As joe has asked us to cover travel, I think it would only be fair to offer the same to Nizar (He'll be coming from Amsterdam so comparable costs).

Thoughts??

charlie oud - 2-19-2009 at 02:14 AM

Ok Dave here are my thoughts. The lovely thing for me about the first meet is that it was above all a social "oud" gathering, Michael Moussa came along as an equal participant gave a talk and played. We all played, shared our oudiness, our backgrounds, with each other in warm mutuality, it was communial. If we start buying in performers, tutors then we are looking at something else. Now if some virtuoso wants to attend as an equal participant like the rest of us this would be cool, so so cool because he would be saying, "oud meet, yeah I play the oud, I wanna be there". Dont get me wrong I will attend regardless, but my attendance wont have anything to do with the star of the show, whoever it is.
I'll go with the crowd, just offering thoughts as requested.
March, early April very close, June gives us more time to get the numbers up. I definately think that the availability of one, including JT and Nazir, should not dictate the date of the meet if it means a number of others are unable to attend. C

DaveH - 2-19-2009 at 02:40 AM

Thanks Charlie, completely understand your point of view, as I'm sure do JT and Nizar. Lets see what the others say.

D

Michael - 2-20-2009 at 10:29 AM

I think I'm with Charlie. I like the idea of a meeting of "equals", tho' of course we'll all be at different levels. The point is that we all meet with a spirit of sharing knowledge, ideas, techniques, licks, tunes, etc... That is, we all meet as "peers" contributing something and we all leave as "peers" having taken something and knowing a bit more and hopefully having "upped our game"! I think having "experts" will mean some people will possibly be in awe of them, I know I would be, and feel too intimidated to contribute and share what we perceive to be our "lesser" knowledge.

There is, of course, value in attending workshops with "experts" and I would certainly be interested in attending if these were organised as separate events. Either way, I'll attend the next meet as I'm keen to meet fellow players.

Ararat66 - 2-20-2009 at 11:20 AM

To be honest with you I'm still in awe of my oud itself and the unfathomable and mysterious depths that lie within its fiery little maple belly;)

Leon

Look forward to meeting you all:buttrock:

Owain-Hawk - 2-20-2009 at 11:22 AM

I agree with Charlie and Michael, turning the meet into an event might... not ruin... but change the spirit of the meet. Of course, meeting JT and Niza and hearing them play live would be an absolute honour!! BUT we shouldn't make it too formal in my opinion. No disrespect to JT but I don't understand, if you are in the UK at the time of the meet, then why are we paying for your flight if you would be coming whether we are having an Oud meeting or not? Of course if you are coming as the star guest that's understandable, but try to get a Ryan Air flight! ;) And Dave, what do you mean 'more formal Workshop'??

All in all, it's gonna be a cracking day... so as long as we all meet, talk and play, who cares! :xtreme:

DaveH - 2-22-2009 at 02:24 AM

Many thanks for your input guys and I completely understand this point of view. So it seems the general consensus is no help with transport. I think this means that JT won't be able to come, being as he's in Paris and it would involve a special trip. I do hope I haven't put anyone on the spot with my initial enthusiasm and apologies if I've jumped the gun.

Owain, more formal workshop was an offer from JT, if we were interested -as in a teaching workshop. I haven't heard from Nizar since my last post but, Nizar, it would be great if you could come and join us.

So we're back to the most likely date being 20th June and the venue offer of Oxford is obviously still there unless people would rather go with somewhere further North. I'm happy with either.

charlie oud - 2-22-2009 at 11:09 AM

Im sure I speak for all by saying no apologies needed Dave, Enthusiasm, suggestions and ideas are healthy, and good to put around, and we've still to hear from others.
We need to agree and secure date and venue a.s.a.p.. When this is done we could maybe start a new thread, say, "UK oud meet No.2 (+ venue+ date)" and hopefully get the numbers up as details will be confirmed for all forum members to see. Keep posting folks. C

Owain-Hawk - 2-22-2009 at 12:46 PM

Forgot to mention in my other post... my fingers have gotten a pretty nasty infection (or something) that has lasted for the last 2 or so months. I've been to 3 different Doctors and each one has contradicted each other, and nobody knows what's wrong... the skin on my fingers keeps splitting for no apparent reason and my hands go a frighteningly deep blue!

Going to see the skin specialist in more than 2 weeks (they haven't actually told me when they can see me). If this doesn't clear up before the meet I don't think I can come, as I obviously don't want to spread it onto all the Ouds and then you lot!! :( That's assuming it is an infection... but better to be on the safe side. I just hope it doesn't effect me meeting you guys... we'll see.

charlie oud - 2-22-2009 at 01:07 PM

Owain mate, chin up & chase up your appointment. Specialist is bound to sort & treat. Thinking of you & hope this clears up soon and that you'll be at the meet, it would'nt be the same without you. C

Owain-Hawk - 2-22-2009 at 01:26 PM

Thanks Charlie! Wow! Wouldn't me the same without me, I'm flattered! :)

See you there hopefuly..

-Regards to all!

DaveH - 2-23-2009 at 12:01 AM

Owain - did they check it's not ouditis? I'm actually serious - wound strings do have things like nickel in them that could cause allergies.

Ararat66 - 2-23-2009 at 01:23 AM

I think settling on a date would be good then we can all plan ahead - I think it would be great if JT or Nizar could come along but I suspect it is almost a different event for those who would like to attend unless they are able to just turn up like the rest of us.

I met Joe (T) a couple of years ago in London and he's a really nice guy and a terrific teacher - not at all intimidating or over judgmental but constructive and patient.

BTW Owain, is the problem with one hand or both - if just your left (fingering) hand then it could be the nickel from the strings, if not and doctors can't agree, try to find a homeopath in your area - my wife (the other of my four blondies) is a homeopath and although there is plenty of opinionated views as to its effectivenss (on both sides) it could well help you, (it has worked wonders on our children at vatius times).

I agree with Charlie it wouldn't be the same without you, blue hands or not.

Best wishes

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 2-23-2009 at 05:14 AM

Hi Dave and Leon, both my hands are effected, not just my fingering hand (in fact, Risha hand is worse). I'm just totally confused because I don't think it is an infection as such. I mean, my skin just keeps cutting itself and rehealing, sometimes puss comes out, sometimes it turns yellow, black or purple... hope it's not skin cancer! Anyway, off to the GP again...

At least it's not effected my Oud playing! :airguitar: And sorry to bother you guys with all this!!

-Thanks.

abusin - 2-23-2009 at 10:52 AM

Kelly - 2-24-2009 at 12:17 PM

Hi All

Just catching up as been away the past week and no oud surfing!
Owain, I Hope your skin clears up for June meet. We all need to look after ourselves as well as our Ouds!
Yes I would be ok with making plans for future events with workshop/tutorial format lets discuss at the meet.

See you all soon

Michael - 3-1-2009 at 10:36 AM

Hey guys

How oud specific is this meeting intended to be? Is there scope for other people interested in middle eastern music?

The reason I ask is that I play in a group with a couple of percussionists - darabuka and daf - and wondered if it was worth letting them know about it. I was just wondering if people would like a couple of percussionists there to maybe do a bit of accompanying.

I haven't mentioned it to them yet. Thought I'd sound you guys out first. No point in getting them all enthusiastic if they won't be welcome.

regards
Michael

Owain-Hawk - 3-1-2009 at 01:19 PM

Hi Michael, I'm not the organizer but I'm sure anyone is welcome! At the previous meet I mentioned to someone that I will bring a Darbuka next time so we can get some music going that isn't just Oud on Oud, and I seemed to get a positive reaction even if I can't remember who I asked.

Looks like I won't have to buy a Darbuka and bring it now if your friends make it. :D

By the way, do you have any music that you guys do, I'd love to hear it!! :airguitar:

Michael - 3-1-2009 at 01:25 PM

Hi Owain

Only very rough recordings at the mo', nothing we're prepared to release to "the general public".

If my drummers are welcome too, then maybe you'll get to hear us live!!!

Either way, I'm intending to bring darabuka, riq and probably a cajon as well as my oud.

regards
M

Owain-Hawk - 3-1-2009 at 01:33 PM

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard of a cajon!! I know that must sound stupid!

What type of music do you guys play and what type of darbukas are they (Syrian, Turkish etc)? Also, who made your Oud if you don't mind me asking, just wondering. :)

Michael - 3-1-2009 at 01:58 PM

Cajon is a box drum commonly used in flamenco, but its sound bears a resemblance to the bendir so I sometimes use it to play Moroccan rhythms.

We use Egyptian type darabukas with the rounded rim, and we play a variety of music from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. In our repertoire are such pieces as Uskudar, Rampi Rampi, Foug al Nakhal, Bint al Shalabiya, etc.. as well as some of our own pieces made up of little licks and melodies that we've cribbed off CDs. We're currently working on the Farid el Atrache classic Leyla. I'm trying to figure out a way to throw in the famous Clapton lick!!!

I bought my oud in Istanbul last April and it's made by Ilhan Cakan. No I've never heard of him either, nor can I find out anything about him on the web.

Owain-Hawk - 3-1-2009 at 02:07 PM

Farid El Atrache classic Leyla?? Don't you mean Alf Leyla Wa Leyla? I didn't think that was Farid...?

Owain-Hawk - 3-1-2009 at 02:07 PM

Ahh, you must mean Yamgabbil yom we leyla?

Michael - 3-1-2009 at 03:12 PM

No, I definitely mean "Leyla" as in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNkseS5Nrlg

Owain-Hawk - 3-1-2009 at 03:22 PM

OK sorry, great song... :airguitar:

Kelly - 3-19-2009 at 01:12 PM

Hi All

Just wanting to firm up arrangements for UK meet.

Am I right in thinking that Dave H is willing to host in Oxford for 20th June. This would allow others interested to make a more central location? Us northerners are happy to share lifts, tents, shisha........... etc. and contribute to the festivities.

Lets make it happen

Best wishes to you all and and don't be shy.

Michael - 3-19-2009 at 02:12 PM

I'm definitely still up for this. But I agree, things seem to have gone pretty quiet on this front.

Kelly - 3-19-2009 at 02:20 PM

Thanks Michael. Anymore for anymore!

charlie oud - 3-20-2009 at 04:06 AM

Im there in my head already!!!!!!!!!!!,
Would'nt miss it for the world.
Hope mr Michael Moussa will be with us again and that he brings a few of his mates!!(ouds)C

Ararat66 - 3-20-2009 at 05:20 AM

I think I've already confirmed but it is yes from me too - what does the man from Del Monte say??

Leon

DaveH - 3-20-2009 at 08:37 AM

Kelly, yes, it's all still on with me for 20th June.

Charlie, thanks for keeping the momentum going.

Leon, I had an email from the man from del monte. He said yes. Now I have to get hold of some pineapples. He said he was inviting Michael Mussa as well, which is great news.

Kelly - 3-20-2009 at 12:02 PM

Nice one Dave

Should be no probs with the pineapples. I hope Michael can make it too. Just dial up the weather and we're sorted

charlie oud - 4-11-2009 at 09:41 AM

OK  Now then. Can we start a new thread "UK Oud gathering 2009" and finally confirm date & venue so that all know and can to try make it. :bounce: Action please :buttrock:

Michael - 5-11-2009 at 01:41 PM

It's now approaching mid-May! June 20th is not so far off and this thread has gone very quiet. Is this event happening?

DaveH - 5-12-2009 at 05:22 AM

Michael, thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to revive the thread but a bit snowed under. Yes, as far as I'm concerned it's still on. These are the people who are signed up as far as I know.

Charlie
Awad and (possibly) his Oxford-Kordofan Rhythm Kings
Kelly
Leon
Michael
Owain (possibly - Owain, your father is also welcome of course)
Matthew (possibly)

Anyone else?

Thanks to a new stud wall, we now have two spare bedrooms plus a living room and couch, so there's a fair bit of room for those who want to stay over, but some may need to bring bedding. Tents are also an option.

If people want to bring some food, obviously that's an option but I might get the local lebanese restaurant to bring us some food for the evening too.

I have the email addresses of all the people above and maybe the best thing is if you confirm you're still coming and I send a circular email, then we can talk details off the forums, but if anyone else wants in, just leave a message on the forums or send me a PM and I'll put you in the loop. All welcome.

On the issue of getting a pro oudist, we decided not this time, but Nizar Rohana is still willing and able and in Europe till Early August. As discussing this in June might make it too late, I think I'll start another thread just to sound out if enough people are interested.

Michael - 5-12-2009 at 06:36 AM

Yup, I'm still intending on attending (if that is'nt too many "tendings")!!

Liking the idea of Lebanese food too!

If you're ever in central Bath and feeling hungry there's a very good Lebanese restaurant called Arabesque in the Podium Shopping Centre - try their all-you-can-eat buffet lunch.

DaveH - 5-12-2009 at 08:22 AM

Thanks Michael - I quite often pass by Bath so will try that. I lived in Bris'l for 5 years by the way. I vote west country for the next oud meet, but I'm getting ahead of myself again!

Michael - 5-12-2009 at 09:27 AM

If we're thinking ahead how about making a West Country event an all weekend thing and renting a camping barn or something? Maybe summer '10? Quantocks, Exmoor, Dartmoor?!!!!

DaveH - 6-13-2009 at 02:01 AM

Last call. This is going ahead next Saturday. If anyone else wants in, post your email address here or send it to me in a U2U.

abusin - 6-15-2009 at 03:54 AM

Hi All,

C'mon UK oudists, can we keep this active for people to see, in case someone have missed the post:))

Tents are ready, maps are printed out, ouds are re strung, food is ordered, cloths ironed and me can't wait no longer for the second UK oud date:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Ararat66 - 6-15-2009 at 11:40 AM

You guys are always saying you don't practice but always seem to play really fine:applause::applause:

David and the others, what time are we all expected roughly to be in Oxford, 10 am, midday or later?

See you all soon
Leon

Ararat66 - 6-15-2009 at 11:41 AM

BTW Charlie

Leon

DaveH - 6-15-2009 at 12:57 PM

I was thinking early afternoon because people are coming from a ways away, but earlier is fine if you prefer - especially as you're only an hour away. Charlie's getting in about midday. Welcome whenever, but don't get up so early you exhaust yourselves for the evening session!

Luttgutt - 6-15-2009 at 01:18 PM

I envy you guys!!

Have a nice time :)

Take a "Trudelutt" for me (a norwegian saying : )

Leon, Look forward to seeing you and Blondie mate !

Owain-Hawk - 6-15-2009 at 02:48 PM

You know you're an Oud addict when you're more excited about seeing a Blondie Oud rather than a blondie girl!!

Ararat66 - 6-16-2009 at 06:09 AM

There'l be another blondie coming to Oxford - this one belongs to my mate Alfie who is just getting going on oud, and what better way to start than on this fabulous one from Michael Moussa.

These photos where taken with my other blondies then round at Alfies place the other week. This was a 60th birthday present from Alfie to ... Alfie - now there's wisdom in action.

charlie oud - 6-16-2009 at 10:45 AM

Ararat66 - 6-16-2009 at 12:08 PM

Hi Alfie

Hello stranger lol.

Yes Charlie it is, its on (permanent) loan from a friend, great fun but I'm not really an electric guitar player ... I really enjoy it though and it brings a different touch and sensitivity to technique so I cut loose with it sometimes. The flame maple blondie thing is purely coincidental, my acoustic is a handmade guitar by a luthier in Salisbury called Nick Marchant, and the SG2000 was offered out of generosity (I kept complaining at the woeful state of its manky old strings and kept offering to get new ones for him and restring it etc ).

My workroom looks a little sparser now Alfie's oud is with ... well Alfie of course:)

Cheers

Leon

Good luck with meet #2 in Oxford guys. Headington is my home town. Hope that the weather is favourable.

DaveH - 6-20-2009 at 12:23 AM

That puts us about 2 miles away, John. It's a long way from here to the praries!

Ararat66 - 6-21-2009 at 07:01 AM

Hi all you UK udis

Thanks for a fabulous meeting, especially to Dave H and his beautiful wife. Absolutely fantastic to meet you all - we need to do this more. I'll put the images and video I've got onto a cd and send to Michael to put onto the web and we can link to here.

Next time I'm going to sort out a really good camera and we ought to sort out some way of good quality video and sound recording. There was some terrific playing happening from everyone and it needs to be honoured.

LETS KEEP THIS GOING ... See you all soon

Leon

Kelly - 6-21-2009 at 10:07 AM

A BIG THANKYOU to Dave for hosting such a great meeting. It was truly fabulous and a feast for the ears and the eyes as well as excellent company. I feel that I have learnt alot through listening and watching others playing. Its a great encouragement to practice more. I look forward to some pics.

I'm sure we will keep this going and maybe post some ideas for songs/tunes to have a go at for next time.

Best wishes to everybody and hope that everyone got home safely.

Michael - 6-21-2009 at 12:04 PM

Yup, arrived safely back in Bristol. Great to meet you all, and really great to hear everybody's playing and try out some lovely ouds. I was really impressed by the standard of playing all round (note to self - practice more).

Many thanks, Dave, for organising, hosting and putting us all up - not to mention putting up with us all.

Maybe see you all 18-19 July?

Michael

Ararat66 - 6-21-2009 at 12:08 PM

Michael

The same applies to you especially now you can do oud wrist yoga :D:D

Cheers

Leon

Owain-Hawk - 6-21-2009 at 12:40 PM

WOW! I don't know where to start! :D

BIG BIG Thanks Kelly for looking after me - you never know how I might react around all those Ouds :)) - taking me to Oxford and back, and of course, teaching me so much of your skill! :buttrock:

MASSIVE thanks to Dave for hosting the event, ordering food, and letting us stay overnight! :xtreme:

THANKS to everybody else for fantastic music! I learnt SO much! I know it sounds strange, but I have greatly improved after this meet! :D I'm really looking forward to see some pics/vids!

... I'm already planning for the next one. :applause:

abusin - 6-21-2009 at 01:07 PM

HI FOLKS, THAT WAS AN AWSOME GATHERING,

thanks DaveH for the outstanding hospitality, sorry for the late arrivals and please keep it to yourselves and save me the embarssment:D
No I really enjoyed those hours with you all, I would have stayed but had to leave.
BIG TANKS to Ustaz Bashir Abbas for the attendance, he enjoyed your playing as much as your company.
Come on guys, it doesn't take that long to upload pics/ vids! I'm really looking forward to see what I missed :bounce:

peace

Owain-Hawk - 6-21-2009 at 01:10 PM

Of course!!!! THANK YOU BASHIR ABBAS!!!!! A LEGEND! :applause: I had a fanstatic time listening to him, it was an HONOUR!

By the way Awad, can you email me your phone number? I didn't hear everything you said to me on Kelly's mobile.

DaveH - 6-21-2009 at 01:26 PM

No sooner said than done, Awad. Here's a few photos. Sorry, I don't really have any video clips worth sharing as my camera wasn't really up to it. Hoping someone has better ones.

That was awesome. I get to play with about 10 fantastic ouds, sorry, oudists, and I didn't even have to leave my own home or wander the motorways (like some!).

Special thanks to Osman for bringing Bashir Abbas, master instrumentalist, composer and King of Khoumassi, along. We all realise what a privilege we've just experienced. Please thank him again for visiting us. I hope you can find some way of sharing the recordings you made.

It was great to finally meet you all and here's hoping we can manage a lot more opportunities to grow together as oudists.

Owain-Hawk - 6-21-2009 at 01:33 PM

Thank you Dave!! GREAT PICS! Of course, special thanks to Osman. As I said, it was a great honour to meet Bashir Abbas.

C'mon Dave though, give a video a try! Even if the video quality is bad, we can still hear something!! Please?! :D
