Nice
Where did you get it?Edward Powell - 5-31-2009 at 09:48 AM
Wow... I've never seen something like this before, wonderful! I would love to hear it!
Are the frets movable? ...do you play 'early music' on this? it that music in 12tone equal temperament, or some mean-tone tuning, or Just
intonation.... or?
thanks Nicola - 5-31-2009 at 11:02 AM
The frets are movable so you can tone better especially if you play with flutes or viella (fidel i think)!
I play on it music beetween 1200-1300! But I'm using it also for a more mothern sound .... Nicola - 5-31-2009 at 11:03 AM

Bravo! Che bella!
...what a sweet sound! Is this an ancient composition? ...sounds very chordal, so it is probably not too ancient....? also a bit like
nahawand.
Thanks so much!
I would like to see some clips of you band... do they exist? Nicola - 5-31-2009 at 12:19 PM

Great stuff.
I thought I was making progress with my fretted oud.
Now I know how far there is to go.
Never mind. Less chat, more practice for me.charlie oud - 6-12-2009 at 06:30 AM
Nicola, Its not my website. Its David van Edwards an English luthier. I am interested in his medieval lutes but they are expensive!!!. I dont think
he has sound files but I have played and heard his lutes. Very nice sound. Do you have contact details for Vincenzo Ciprian?jdowning - 6-13-2009 at 12:44 PM
Nicely done Nicola.
I am curious about the lute. There are no lutes (or other instruments) surviving from the European medieval period so can you provide more information
about the model used by Vincenzo Ciprian for his lute design (a painting perhaps?), historical data used to determine bracing layout etc.
Thankscharlie oud - 6-15-2009 at 10:36 AM
J D, David van edwards makes a couple of models and shows the iconography upon which they are based. As for bracing etc there are only later models
i.e. 6 course. Plectrum use on the 5 & 4 course was common so oud construction would be a reasonable guide, dont you think?jdowning - 6-15-2009 at 12:44 PM
Yes - but there are no surviving ouds either that predate even the late 18th C - let alone the Medieval period.
Recreation of any lute, prior to the 16th C, is an exercise in speculation. Not that one should not try. Nicola - 6-16-2009 at 05:16 AM
The music is Nas Coitas a Cantigas composed from King Alfonso X de Castiglia!!
I mean the one on the website!Nicola - 6-16-2009 at 05:22 AM
Here a website of "maestro Vincenzo Cipriani"!
The medival lute is e reproduction from e fresco placed in S: Agostino church in Assisi!patheslip - 6-16-2009 at 08:38 AM
Looking at the price on the vanedwards site for the medieval lute I wonder if any oud makers in the Near East or Maghreb would make or convert into a
lute a four or five course oud by making a straight pegbox and add the touchettes. It might make a perfectly respectable alternative, especially for
those of us who do the odd banquet or fair, where life is not terribly refined.
Our am I behind the curve and instruments are already being shipped in large numbers from the skilled craftsmen of this area to the open arms of the
West's impecunious players?jdowning - 6-16-2009 at 03:46 PM
Nicola - for those of us who may be unfamiliar with the fresco in the St Agostino church in Assisi is it possible to post an image for information?
Also do you have a link to the website of "maestro Vincenzo Cipriani" - if this will provide an answer to my question about the design of the lute?
ThanksNicola - 6-16-2009 at 11:18 PM

Sorry i thought i had attached the link!
