portable amplifier

adamgood - 6-24-2009 at 01:50 AM

Hi all,
There's a good amount of info on the message board about pickups and pickup techniques but what about portable amplifiers? I'm in the market since I don't own a car, I need something that I can get around with using the metro.

acoustic guitar amplifiers?

small portable PA systems?

A Mouse amp is too small, a Crate Taxi is too crappy...something in between those and a roland Cube 60 for example!

any thoughts? thanks!

I have a Roland AC-60, which sounds great. It gets a bit heavy, though, especially if you use the over-the-shoulder strap on the case. If you carry it without the case it's not so bad, but the case has some nice pockets.

Hello Adam

I was in the same position some months ago as i was searching for a small and nice sounding amp to use it as a monitor on the stage or for rehearsals etc.
The first i have to tell you is that these small "demons" are not cheap !
So these are my recommendations : (all of them have 2 inputs-mic, line- and some build-in fx...)

1) AER Compact 60 ( http://www.aer-amps.info/index.php?page=shop.product_details&fl... )

It is small and under 8 kg . Very nice acoustic sound and very Loud . Im really happy with this small german "teufel". It costs new around 890€

2)Schertler David ( http://www.schertler.com/prodotti_ing/loudspeakers/david.htm )
It has 80Watts (20 more than AER) and it costs around 750€. Really nice sound too...If i hadnt find a second hand AER in half price i would definitely buy this one.

3)MARKBASS AC 601 ( http://www.markbass.it/products.php?lingua=en&cat=3&vedi=74 )
I never had the chance to try it out but i heard very good critics about it and i think it would be in the same league as the other two...

I hope i helped a little bit

Nikos

Hi,

You've also the little AER Alpha acoustic amp :
- 40 Watts
- 6.5 kg
- 260mm x 265mm x 235mm
- Around 650 euros (900$)

Very good sound.

Guys thanks for the ideas!

The only ones I know from these are the AER amps. A few years ago I was using my friend's 60w on a regular basis for my nylon string guitar and it always really impressed me. I love how it acts as a small portable PA system for acoustic instruments and for vocals as well but of course I have limited experience with other brands so nothing to compare it to.

I kinda forgot about it so thanks for reminding me!

I've always been a bit put off by the price but I think it's time to just do it.
