Old oud label - I need some help!

Danielo - 10-21-2009 at 10:47 AM

Hello everybody,

I found a very nice old oud, probably Armenian, that I'm tempted to buy, from the twenties . However I cannot read the label.

Could you read the name of the luthier?

thanks for your help!

Dan

The labels are not very clear,

The first name of the luthier is Reda (Reza) and it is made in 1926. I can't decipher the rest.

On David Parfit's oud page there are pictures of an oud made by Riza Usta of Istanbul in 1926, that belongs to Daniel Franke, Maybe he is the same person? hmmm.....I keep investigating :)

Hi...
The seller of this oud wants me to build for him a double-neck instrument - one neck oud and second neck folk guitar. The price I would ask him is about the same as he is asking for this 1926 oud. I am tempted to make a trade with him - the oud for an instrument I would build for him.

Can anyone tell me, assuming that the 1926 oud is in good condition, would it hold it's value at around 1500Euro?? What do you guys think?

I am NOT an expert on vintage ouds. Thanks!

Difficult to assess exactly from the low resolution images but the 1926 Riza Usta posted on David Parfitt's site does not seem to be the same instrument as the 1926 Riza Usta currently for sale. The bridge and 'beard' are not the same and the latter does not have sound board edge binding. Also the string proportions are different - the former being the 'classic' 1/3:1/3:1/3 division of the string length whereas the latter is not - the distance from neck joint to centre of soundhole is less than 1/3 (which conforms to a couple of old Manol instruments that I have images of).

This looks to be a very nice old Turkish oud but - sight and sound unseen/unheard - it is, of course, impossible to fully judge. The current owner states that the sound board is 80 years old which is a bit of a puzzle as the oud itself is 86 years of age - but perhaps I misunderstood the French description?

The sound board geometry seems to be very similar to some of the surviving Manol ouds - but I have not taken the time to verify if this is the case.

hmmm... I will see if I can somehow actually see and try this instrument - if I like it to the touch and sight I will make him an offer.... problem is he is in Paris, not Prague!
