Fretless bass soloists that compose and improvise using Maqam system?

Hi there. I'm a big fan of Jonas Hellborg and his synthesis of Western and Classical Indian styles. He uses fretted basses using Western temperament, however.

I'm curious if you can recommend any bass soloists and virtuosi that really understand Maqamat and incorportae them into their compositions.

Thanks!

Thanks, I've actually come across Garcia-Fons before in a flamenco context. I liked his technique but the music itself not so much. I'll check out the ensemble you mentioned as well as the other musicians on your list.

Thanks again!

Any chance that someone here know of any cellists that perform Arabic music?
