Üstad Necati Çelik Concerts in SF Bay Area!

Dear Lovers of the Oud--

Üstad Necati Çelik, the great oud maestro from Istanbul, Turkey, will perform this year in the San Francisco Bay Area in a small number of very special concerts. Those of you who are fans of Turkish classical and Sufi music, and particularly of Necati's, have wanted to know his entire concert schedule, so it is listed below.

Necati Çelik [pronounced: ne-ja-ti che-lik], primary oud player with the Turkish Ministry of Culture, is not only Turkey's premier oud virtuoso, but also a leading expert on the sacred music of the Sufi tradition, a composer, and an exquisite vocalist with a unique style. He will be performing music of the Ottoman courts, contemporary pieces, Sufi music, and perhaps some of his own compositions. The secular music of the Ottoman courts was compiled not only by Turkish composers, but also by brilliant representatives of the Armenian, Greek, Jewish, Balkan and Arabic communities whose cultures were part of the Ottoman Empire in it greatest days—and by the sultans themselves. Sufi religious music, also an important part of Turkish classical music, includes movements from the sophisticated suites performed as part of the ceremonies of the Whirling Dervishes, as well as medleys of ancient devotional hymns, many of which are still popular today.

Necati's performances are marked by extensive improvisations, known as taksims, sometimes freestanding, sometimes performed as introductions, and other times as interludes between pieces. Necati’s improvisations are a combination of spontaneity, intensity and technical mastery seldom found together in one musician from any culture. Because of the spontaneous nature of these improvisations, no two performances are ever the same.

All of Necati's Bay Area performances this summer will be dedicated to Mimi Spencer. Mimi, who passed away recently, was a vibrant performer, teacher and promoter of Middle Eastern music in the Bay Area. Mimi was Necati’s long-time friend and student. She also produced his CD Classical Music of Turkey, featuring Necati and his friend, kanun player Halil Karaduman.

Concert in Berkeley

Last night I attended a concert by Üstad Necati Çelik in Berkeley.

The number of people attending was small but the music was fabulous. Vince Delgado was the percussionist.

Üstad Çelik is a very friendly and kind person, and since there weren't too many people we sat around and talked about everything, he showed me how he makes his own rishas (mizrabs) and the best way to hold it, etc, etc. It was just great.

People in the Bay area, don't miss the opportunity to see this great Turkish Master before he leaves.

Check the schedule for the remaining concerts in Hank Levin's message above.

The concerts were in memory of my late teacher Mimi Spencer.

Don't miss them
