Greek ensemble "Vosporus"

Kalimera Ellines & Hellenophiles,

I saw four CDs listed on Studio 52's web page (http://www.studio52.gr/Mikrasim.htm) by the ensemble "Vosporus" under the Asia Minor category. Does anyone know their style of music and instrumentation?

I have a good collection of Greek music with outi (oud), kanonaki (qanoun), etc. from 2 trips to Greece (2002 in Athens and the Islands, 2003 to Thessaloniki and the north), but never heard of Vosporus.

If any of you oud lovers make it to Thessaloniki, Greece, be sure to vist Studio 52 shop. They have a very good selection of Greek Smyrnaic music CDs and the owner is actually knowledgeagble and helpful.

They sell my favorite Greek CD: http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000hog (Stayrakakis brothers w/Ross Daly).

Efharisto Poli,
John

Hi John,

Thanks for the tip, I'll be checking that out. I think I've heard of Bosporos, but I don't remember any details. I'll let you know if I find something out. Maybe some other guys here on the forums know more.

Na'sai kala,

Hi again,

I just searched them on PHANTIS which is a great Greek search engine. Here is a link to an album description of theirs. They seem to collaborate with some pretty big names, like Hasan Essen - http://www.musical.gr/cddetails.scr?gui_language=1&CD_code=LIFT089-2

Take care,

Thanks Mav!

I found an English-language site with a description and sound samples for the CD "From the Bosphorus to Pera":

Greek jazz musicians with Turkish "tradional" musicians...

Best,

Bosporos was one of the first Ensembles that introduced in Greece of the 80's the Classical music of Istanbul and not only.I think they publiced then 3-4 Lp's (Greek composers from Istanbul among them).

The Last collaboration is with the Jazz-Group "mode plagal".They are greek jazz-musicians ,who are experimenting with traditional sounds and melodies.
