Nice oud and playing. I'm interested in the background. Where can I get one of those Byzantine-style tapestries?

Hey everyone. I'll try to explain this as best as I can, and if I leave anything out in this post, I'll try to add on to it in a following one. From what I've gather about the first of the two ouds posted in Mike's post, there are an extra 7 strings that have been added to the oud that are called sympathetic strings. These strings are not to be plucked, but when you play the regular strings on the oud, these will resonate with some of the notes that are being played. When the played doesn't want these strings to be a part of the sound, they simply can put some sticky tape on them, and they're muted.

If you were to strike these strings, they'd sound like a kanun or a harp. Is that cool, or what??

As far as the tuning goes... it changes from maqam to maqam. For Nahawand on Fa, it has been suggested that the sympathetic strings be tuned to C, G, Ab, f, f(octave higher), e, F two octaves lower or an Ab. If the maqam changes, the tuning on the strings would have to as well. So one would strictly have to play the maqam that has been set to match what the sympathetic strings have been tuned to.

Sounds like an awesome idea to me.

Yes but this is nothing new in the world of lutes. Sympathetic strings have been around for several hundreds of years and just take a look at the Torba.

Best wishes
