Taqsim Nahawand on G from the Recent Kan Zaman Concert

Hey everybody,

Here's the taqsim from the Kan Zaman concert last week. Hope you all enjoy.

Beas. One, I didn't get to meet you, but I remember you posted somewhere on the forum that you'd be there. Mike, I saw you front row (!) but I didn't get to catch up with you afterwards. Hope you're doing well, buddy.

That was an amazing taqaseem Peter! You rock! I was really impressed with your risha skills.

Your oud sounds/looks great too. Was that a Shahata? It appeared to have a floating bridge, but I wasn't sure?

Sam,

Thanks a lot for the comments, buddy. The oud isn't a Shehata; it's made by an unknown oud maker, as far as I can tell. Fixed bridge, by the way. I have yet to own a Shehata.

Jameel... only in my wildest dreams, man.

Great job Peter!

I was planning on attending. I had a phone reservation, but I lost it because I was a few minutes late. I was there before the show started, but I didn't think to bring cash with me so I had to make a quick run to the ATM and when I got back my reservations was gone. I couldn't believe it, but I guess it's because I didn't pre-pay.

Beas. One, that's too bad. I had some of my friends come a bit late and they lost their reservations too. The concert sold out pretty quickly; as far as I know, they even had to set up some extra chairs in the back so some people could attend.

Mike, I saw your dad as well. He seemed to have had a great time. I'm glad you enjoyed it as well. Mabrouk on your Khalaf oud, by the way, buddy.

Awad, thanks a lot, man. I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I, too, really like the sound of the oud itself; it's still a relatively young one too (about 2 years old since it was made), and I can't wait until it gets even better with time.

Thanks again.

Peter- I've been working on a Nahawand in G, but when I saw your take on it I felt like putting my oud away and crying! whew! you are really gifted! I would like to ask you about your oud background, and perhaps others in the forum may be interested as well. when did you take up playing the oud? did you study with any particular teacher, etc? any 'tips' for the rest of us? Like Abusin said, I'm also proud to be a part of Mike's greater oud community and 'rub shoulders' with all the talented players out there, a real inspiration to us. all the best, Matthew

Best tip of all: never put your oud away! Thank you very much for your kind words, Matthew. I started playing I think in May of 2003, if I remember correctly. No teacher, really. I just watched a few players in admiration for a few months, then tried picking it up myself.

As for "tips"... I can't really think of any off the top of my head (had a very long day). Two come immediately to me as the real means of advancing: listen a lot to the Masters that have played before us, and ask a lot of questions.

Let me know if you need anything else; I'd be very willing to help in whatever capacity I can.

Peter
