I realise that I don't know a lot about western (popular) music...

It depends by what are we comparing, what is the criteria? I guess as a singer who produced eternal music I would compare her to Frank Sinatra  or Fitzgerald

Not mainstream or anything, but I'd have to go for Amalia Rodrigues.

On the classical side, it would have to be Maria Callas.

I would say Edith Piaf from France

and Nana Moushouri from Greece

Hi Edward, Oum was an amazing singer and personality but I'd say as far as overall popularity and worldwide influences (on music, culture, fashion, etc.) the Beatles were in another league mate! :)

It depends, as Souleil says, on what criteria we are using as a yardstick to compare by.
