String tension

Peace you all,

I was wondering what is the average string tension for a classic Arabic oud?

I have measured the string tension on C2 string, the lowest pitch tunned to E2 at 14.65 lb-mass. I guess my cheap Yaseen 3ali Khaleefeh oud can take it.

I can also help you folks pick strings for your oud if you know what tension and tuning you want. Let me know.

Here's the tensions for Pyramids Super Oud set for a 60 cm string length:

c´- 3,9 kg tension
g - 3,6 kg tension
d - 4,0 kg tension
A - 3,8 kg tension
G -3,9 kg tension

For the Daddario strings, here is the tensions (these are in Newtons):

C 32
F 36
A 37
D 39
G 22
C 24

I hope that gives you some idea. Basically, the all string sets are in a similar range.

Hi Sam,

Thank you for this data. This gives me an idea. One question:

Are these the tensions you measured or are they what the manufacturer states?

Regards,
Elie
