tips on how to shellac an oud

does anyone have a working knowledge of the process of "french polish" or rubbed shellac finishes- I have just made a batch of orange shellac from the little flakes and some denatured alcohol- I mixed it every day for a week, then let it rest for about another two weeks- the result is a very pretty looking clear polish towards the top of the jar and a cloudy bottom- I was told the brush on method was most effective, but in oud builders circles it seems that may not be the case- PLEASE ANY HELP WILL BE A BLESSING-
