Hijaz Kar Kurd - Song Suggestions?
I am looking for songs/compositions in maqam Hijaz Kar Kurd, AKA makam Kurdilihecazkar. My oud student likes the tonality, and I think songs on C
(Do) Hijaz Kar Kurd (with the Db) are a good opportunity for her to practice intonation.
Any suggestions, especially relatively simple pieces?
Thanks,
"Udi" John

Doesn't Munir Bashir have a hijaz kar kurd samai? It's actually my least favourite piece that I'm playing at the moment, but it's relatively
straightforward.

Tatyos has a beautiful Hijazkar Kurd sama'i.
Rohi el Khammash also has a nice one but it is fairly challenging, might be too difficult depending on your student's level.
Hayyart Albi Maak is a good song, but like many of Oum Kalthoum's song, quite long.

Hi.
These two songs by 'Udi Avram Levi aka Misirli Ibrahim Efendi are really good:

https://books.google.co.nz/books?id=4Sm4AfoTmgoC&pg=PA37&lpg...
There are some really interesting differences between Hijaz Kar Kurd and Kurdi maqam, and are really noticeable in these two songs.
I can transpose them to concert pitch soon.

The Tatyos samai is the best simple samai thaqil I've ever heard. I would definitely pick that one when I think she's ready to learn a samai. I am
attaching a score I like.
Yes: I know what you mean about the Umm Kulthum songs being long. I just gave her a score (Nicola Marjieh's) of "El Ward El Gamil," which, at 5 pages
long, is by far our longest chart.

Yup. I agree with you on both accounts. I am attaching the score by our own Jonathan Gemmill. Yeah...I don't think she's ready for this yet.

Jonathan: Thanks for sharing your ideas and for creating and posting transposed scores of the Ottoman/Turkish pieces! You are extremely generous, my
friend...now, don't force me to make you another Certificate of Appreciation.

I should mention that the song that inspired her to ask for more pieces in Hijaz Kar Kurd on C (Do) was this score of "Ya Baghet El Rouh" by Sayyid
Darwish. Although it is a very short piece, it has some fast and rhythmically tricky passages that make it the most difficult piece she's played so
far.

Another good example of a simple-ish piece that I like to have my student play for intonation practice is the muwwashah, "Zarani El Mahboub." This is
in Hijaz Kar, though, not Hijaz Kar Kurd. I particularly like Humam Eid's score:

I found Adel Samuel's score on AhYaSalam.com (attached), but it looks to me like straight-up Kurd on D, not Hijaz Kar Kurd. (It does go through some
interesting-looking modulations later in the piece.) This actually may be easy enough for my student. Thanks for the reference, though; maybe we'll
play it anyway and try a little maqam analysis.

Thanks!
I think I will eventually have enough pieces for a second book including the Ali Ufki transcriptions.
There are a couple of minor mistakes on 2 of the charts, I will fix and upload soon.
Also thanks for sharing more pieces in this maqam

I am posting another song score in Hijaz Kar Kurd on C. This is an Egyptian Coptic hymn attributed to the late Pope Shenouda. This is another song I
worked on with my student. Very simple, but a nice melody.

Hi,
Two of my favorite kurdilihicazkar pieces that have not been mentioned here yet as far as I could see:
Vasilaki
Audio example for Vasliaki
Necdet Yasar
Yasar and company playing his saz semai
Also, in general, when searching for good songs of the Ottoman repertoire, Sevki Bey (Shevki) is almost always a good bet for excellent melodies.
Take care,
mav

While it doesn't follow the classic Kurdili Hicaz Kar seyir, it is normally on C and isn't exactly Kurd either. I'm surprised he wrote it on D.
Though the orchestra was tuned down, it's clear that Qasabji is playing it "on C" from an oud perspective:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qb4EiYWI998
(tuned down a minor third!)
Like most 'modern' Arabic music, the developmental pathways have evolved to be different from the 'classical' Ottoman forms.

Good piece!
Thanks for the transcription
Interesting, I have this CD, it was a 'bellydance' CD I found in a warehouse shop and I always wondered who the group was and where they were from.
Good to finally discover the original album.

Kurdili Hijazkar Longa by Kemani Sebuh
http://youtu.be/vMhDbr3W6Bs
Very famous and popular piece in the Armenian community.
Sebuh Simonian was a blind Armenian violinist and the teacher of Tatyos Effendi.

That is certainly a great piece. I am attaching the Arabic score of it from Zeryab.com . It's also a bit beyond my student's current skill level.
