Folk style oud playing
Despite how much I love the work of the great masters of oud I find some deep part of my soul touched by the simple folk playing of cultures around
the world.
The nubian clip from al oud that mike has generously provided for us is one example.
Hamza El Din plays some beautiful and decievingly simple melodies on oud.
Is anyone here aware of some more folk style oud players, cds or movies?
There is a movie By Director Tony Gatlif called
Vengo it is about the dealings of some spanish gypsies and it has in it some amazing sufi music with oud drum and Nay Check it out!!!!

very early on i happened to buy some discs by an algerian oud player named habib guerroumi. i don't know if you would call what he does
"folk" technique but some of his licks wouldn't seem out of place in good american county music - i don't mean nashville, i mean
good, clean, very relaxed, sitting on the front porch type oud playing. most of the other oud cds i'm familiar with seem to go in for highly
emotional, tour-de-force displays of technique and oud wizardry. habib simply plays. he also has a wonderful voice.
i've noticed that he doesn't use the drone quite so much as other players. he tunes his oud in straight 5ths (B - E - A - D - G - C)
instead of the other, more conventional tunings and has a wider range of octave bass notes to compliment the melody.
i think it's simple and elegant. i mean no disrespect when i say his music is just great for tapping your toes to.

dear zulkarnain -
yes, the tuning worked well for me at the start as well.
but that doesn't mean that beautiful things can't be done with it. trying to make something simple and comprehensive at the same time...
ain't...
easy....
sincerely - bill
