Oud teachers in Seattle area? And a few basic questions..

Hi all,

I'm about to move to the Seattle area in a few months, and I'm planning on finally taking oud lessons. I'm looking for any leads I can get on teachers in that area - does anyone know of any?

Also - about buying an oud - I don't have an instrument yet, and I'm a little confused about the differences between turkish, egyptian, etc. - are the instruments themselves built differently, or is it a stylistic thing? I don't want to buy an instrument before I get a little more info. I'm looking to spend around $1,000-$1,100 for something that will last me a little while - any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Mel

welcome to the forum Mel- there is a very good resource for the oud in the person of 'Dr.Oud', Richard Hankey. He is near Vancouver, WA. -

some answers to your questions re: Turkish/Arabic ouds can be found in the FAQs section of the forum. just scroll down the questions.

Turkish ouds tend to have a shorter string scale for one thing, which some players like, others prefer a longer scale.
you ought to be able to find a nice oud with your budget, but take your time and do a little:) research and then decide!regards, MW

You can look up Kane Mathis on the web -- he's a well-trained Turkish oud player AND a great kora player to boot. I've had a couple lessons with him and he's a good teacher.
