studing Oud in Cairo
Dear Oud lovers,
I am thinking seriously of moving to Il Cairo (or elsewhere) for some months to study Oud and arabic music in general.
Is there a school there where I can attend a course of 3 months?
Does anybody knows how it works and How much it costs (if it exists!)?
Does anybody know something about rooms to let there (prices for example)?
I can also consider to go somewhere else. It doesn't really matter.
What I need is studing seriously for a while spendind as little money as possible!
I also consider to take private lessons in some arabic city in which I can get in contact with other oud players, oud makers, oud shops and
concerts.
I am also intrested in workshops in Europe.
I am not a beginner (but not even a good player!) but I play in a very personal way and I know very little about traditional music forms, maqam
etc.
Please, help me\
I really need to get into arabic music. I need a teacher!!

Hi,
I can only answer one of your questions, where you can study oud?
The best place in Cairo is Bait Al oud managed by Naseer shamma. I dont have exacte address, But it is opposite of Al-hussain Mosqe, you cross the
street, behind Al-Azhar Mosqe, Ask about "Bait Al hawari". I dont have any contact number or prices. I have been there recently.

I spend a few months in Beit al oud in 2005.
At this time fees where around 250 EGP/month for locals and 250$/month for foreigners...but actually if you made a long stay tourism visa once in
Cairo they make you pay the fee for locals.
It is very easy to get such a visa in Cairo, cheap and you get it in the day.
For course, you just have to present there. There are 3 sessions a week, you can register in the school at any time of the year, for the time you
want, and for any level, or at least it was like this in 2005.
Beit el Harawi is also a turistic place, and old house to visit mentionned in any turistic guidebook.
For accomodation, I found a flat in colocation, there is many advertisement for this kind of offer, for exemple in the cultural center of different
country embassies or american university.
We had a flat for 3 person, in Dokki, for 75 euros a month each.
So a bit difficult to plan before, but once there you may easily find a way to make an affordable stay.
About workshops, did you know about labyrinth musical sessions, in Creete?
They make winter and summer sessions.

I don't know anything about arabic countries\ I have only been several times in Istanbul.
The news about the school and its flexibility is great!!
And it's also good to know that once one is there is not very difficult to get things going well with accomodation etc..

I already knew something about it but as far as I understand they organize mainly Turkish style oud seminars, while I am intrested in arabic
style..

By the way don't forget " beit el ud " is managed by Naseer Shamma, so mostly you will practice pieces which are not of the " old school style ".
My teacher there was very interested in this style and in the turkish school, but he doesn't teach there anymore.
I guess anyway you may find someone in the school for this style, teaching in the school or a connection to take private lessons in parallel of the
school.
Moreover I think it has change a lot since I've been there. Last videos I saw on youtube of the school orchestra features qanun, ney and baglama
players.
I heard also of lessons at the opera house of cairo.

Daniel, the AUC website isn't working, but I bought my oud from a professor there in 2006. I know that he was offering lessons, and more likely than
not, he'd be able to get you to the right place. His English is okay. Give me a little bit and I'll find his name for you.
