Hi everybody
I was wondering if any one knows if Galli makes strings for
Arabic tuning too or not ? and if so which model is that?
Also I guess they are really hard to find , Deos anyone know
where I can purchase Galli strings ?
Also was wondering if anyone used the turkish gauged
Galli string for arabic tuning ,Does that respond well?
Thanks

Hi Ali try this link

http://www.gallistrings.com/inglese/carrello.asp?id_cat=6&id_so...

There are a number different types-I've not tried them myself but seen on other ouds. I think medium tension.
Shipping from Italy to UK within EU here is expensive. I'm not sure where you are based so either order larger quantity or go in with someone local to you.

Try a search on this site there may be an older thread

Did you tried also turkish set on an arabic tuning?
If the stringlength of your oud is like 60~62cm it may work well:
you loose 0.8 kilo in tension by tuning 1 tone lower but you gain an average 0.13 kilo by cm more in stringlength (turkish set are usually calculate for a standard 58.5cm length).

Then I can tell you the result for those strings, I never tried.
regards

Thanks kelly and thank you suz_i_dil

suz_i_dil , My oud stringlength is between 60-62cm, So you think that may work?
I was Also wondering what tension do I need to have for my arabic tuning( tuned
based on 440Hz) ?
what guages do you recomand on DA'Dario single strings to purchase and assemble
my own set , Whould you help me with that ? I do not now how to calculate the
string gauges.

Also based on this logic loosing 0.8kg for lowering one tune
and gaining 0.13kg/cm length added, then we would need to have (0.8/0.13 )= 6.15cm extra length to cover the total tension loss and keep our tension right , Is that correct?

Thanks
Ali

For average of tension variation I took information on Jameel Khalaf website,
http://www.khalafoud.com/labellastrings.htm
http://www.khalafoud.com/strings.htm

If the turkish set you choose has a rather high tension it may work fine, even if you don't recover the original tension.
Your calculation is correct, but I guess Labella turkish set make something like 3.7 kilo, like their arabic set, and I find it a bit heavy on the turkish tuning.
So one tone lower more 3cm stringlength and you get something like 3.2 or 3.3 kilo...medium to low tension but it depends on your taste and you may like it.
Depends on the oud also, I feel if the soundboard thin I prefer low tension, but higher tension on ouds with a thicker soundboard...It's a personnal feeling, don't take it as a rule!

Anyway to calculate like this is very unprecise, we don't know the original tension of the set and it is an average of tension variation. I think you may try, and you'll see anyway. Once again I never tried but some did it and liked it.

For tension it depends on your taste, for a floating bridge I prefer rather high tension, up to 4 kilos, but for fixed bridge much lower, like 3.3 or 3.4 but with first and last course a bit higher in tension.
Keep in mind some players will prefer to use the same tension for all courses, it is a matter of taste.

I don't want to confuse you. First I think you may try ready made set, then if you don't find something for you go ahead for a custom set.
You have the standard stringlength for an arabic oud, I mean ready made set are usually calculate for your stringlength so I think you can find something to fit your taste like this.
A beginning may be for exemple Aquila light tension set or Labella turkish set tune in arabic to get a lower tension, or Labella Arabic set with a single string for the C (like recomend on jameel website), there is also Kurschner set which are fine and Lenzner for your stringlength would work fine.

Just a last advice, never tune an arabic set to turkish on your stringlength, you may damage your oud by too much increasing the tension.

Regards
Marouan
