Need a piece for oud and cello
Hi folks,
i have a concert soon and i need to play one piece with a cello player...
Any clues ?traditionnal /modern, any ideas welcome !!

Cello players? Well, they come in all shapes and sizes, and they bring their own cellos. Some of them wear black and belong to the union. Tell 'em to
"noodle in Ajam on Jaharkah", most of them can handle that. 
p.s. How soon is "soon", your concert that is? How long a piece?

salut Tarbool- Ca va? I collaborated with a cello player not long ago. The cello is a powerful instrument in it's own right, and so some songs worked
well and others not as well.
One song that did work, and sounded really cool, and is a crowd pleaser is that old standby 'Lamma Badda'. I transposed it to the key of C for the
cello. The oud and cello playing the melody line together seems to work and was nice...especially with a bit of percussion. You could also try 'El
Helwa -di' by Sayyed Darwish, a bit more of an uptempo number. a bientot, MW

Nizar Rohana did a concert here in April with Shirley Smart on Cello. It worked really well, but you probably need a sensitive cellist to make the
balance work, especially if it's unamplified. I thought Tanbouri Cemil Bey's Semai Farahfaza worked really well, but most of the really good turkish
semais would also work. The audience also loved Anouar Brahem's Parfum de Gitane.
PS Se pourrait-il que l'on se connaisse, a travers ton oncle et ta tante V & A?

I posted a transcription of this piece somewhere on this forum . . . search for anouar brahem and it should turn up.
I've played with a few cello players, it works really well with oud. Almost anything works with a good player. Oud and cello have roughly the same
range, so you can experiment with the cello playing low and the oud high, and also with the cello high and the oud low, or in the same register.
You can experiment with the cello playing pizz or arco as well. Lots of possibilities.

There's always the scenario of having the cello play drones while you play a taqsim with restrained modulation of the tonic. With an intelligent
cellist, who has some improvising background, you can make this work quite adequately, and be a "world music" type crowd-pleaser.

i play both - oud and cello, and find that samai's usually work well for the cello. if your cellist is trained in a western manner - choose one
without quarter tones, like munir bashir's nahawand samai. i've played in on both oud and cello, and it's beautiful on both instruments.

(tu te souviens de moi, à Bruxelles...)
I heve a recording of a samai nahawand composed by Simon Shaheen. The piece was recorded on an cd of Maya Beiser, a jazz and avantgarde cellist who
invited Simon to play one piece on her cd called 'Kinship'.
A wonderful samai, but it doesn't seem easy to play.
Here is the file compressed and in mono.
