New Rio Rosewood Oud

I would like to share with you my new oud made by my friend Majid Atik in Morocco.
I have sent him the wood last year and this is what he has made for me :)
It has an amazing sound
specs:
Bowl: Brazilian rosewood (all)
neck: brazilian rosewood
pegbox: brazilian rosewood
bridge and pickguard: Walnut
soundboard: German Spruce
fingerboard: ebony
Purfilng around rosettes and the soundboard is all hand made by Jamal Belhaiba. a master in details.

Initially I was using Labella strings, but replace it with Pyramid (lute strings high tension) to achieve higher level of sound and performance. and yes, there is a big difference.

It's beautiful, but I just can't imagine using Brazilian (rio) rosewood.
The wood is an endangered species. There are a ton of alternate woods that are similar (not the same). Why contribute to the forestation of these endangered trees?
There are a few old pieces of Brazilian rosewood out there, or pieces harvested from stumps. But, those are few and far between. And, like pre-ban ivory, pre-ban Brazilian rosewood fuels the demand for the wood, and is often actually post-ban wood that has simply been re-named.
The craftsmanship on your oud looks absolutely stunning, by the way.

Thanks guys.
Jonathan, I agree with you and I would never use it if it was not harvested before 1995. this are 2 old pieces of wood (just few and older than 25 years) that I have had got as a gift and it a shame If it will rot somewhere in the basement.
I'm also an enviromenent friendly person, don't worry! There are even forniture (tables and chairs) made of Brazilian rosewood that are sometimes reused for other projects. the wealthy danish people can tell you more about this if you can find one.

Best regards, Samir

Sabbassi,

this oud looks like a sexy woman of new fashion.

I think this it is the first oud which impresses me so much by looking at it at the first time.

Enjoy it well mate

That's interesting!

When I took pictures of Elias Nahat's instruments here in Brazil, I noticed he used rosewood. Of course by that time, those trees were not already endagered. May be Elias was the first one to use this kind of wood in ouds and other oriental instruments he manufactured....

Thank u for posting Sabassi!

Hi Mourad,

Once you own a Brazilian Rosewood oud, try to keep it unless you desperately need the money. sorry my friend not for sell.
