music places in Iran
Hello,
I'm going to visit Iran soon, and wondering if some may advice me on places where it is possible to listen classical iranian music.
I may look for an instrument there, but anyway not going to spend all my time after that, being my first visit in this country.
Maybe some shop where I can try decent instrument and see which is the more playable for me?

If you go to Tehran , you need to go to BAHARESTAN Square that has many
music shops

We arrive in Tehran, then first go to Esfahan, Yazd and Shiraz. Then I think we'll visit Kerman, and depending on the time left we may visit Tabriz
area or Lorestan/Kordestan.

Hey
Once you are visiting Shiraz , you should know There is a BAZAR in Shiraz , Called
BAZAR ENGHELAB , and there are so many music shops in there ,all in the same shopping
center .
Bazar Enghelab is in walking distance from FALAKE GAAZ,

I was thinking to visit Mohammadi workshop: for the pleasure of eyes and ears. I surely can't afford their work regarding the price of their dealer in
Europe...and I don't think they make the confusion between me and a local artist.

The bazaar shops sell second quality instruments for 3-4 times the price of the first quality directly from the makers. It's best to contact the maker
directly or find an agent rather than go to the bazaar.
If you want an oud, contact Mohamed arafati Info@oudarafati.com. (you'll need Farsi).
For santur, it's Diaroush Salari he's the best by far and he can connect you with all the other instrument makers in Tehran. He's fluent in English.

Thank you Dr oud for your advice, I'll remember once there. I don't speak a word of farsi so I'll see there by visiting their workshop.
What about classical music, do you know any place used to programm such events?

The music bazaar and shops are a good source of information about events. I recommend you connect w/ Salari, he knows everybody, speaks English
fluently an is very helpful. You'll find most Persians to be very helpful as well, and most of the younger people speak at least some English and
welcome the chance to us it. Just ask for help and you'll get it. You'll find the food to be cheap and delicious. No processed food, everything is
grown naturally and is delivered fresh.

I go back now and then to Iran and ive seen a few concerts. Try and look at posters in the streets, often the concerts (classical) that I have been
too I only knew about them because of posters and advertisements.
I think someone already said but baharestan sq is a good place for music shops and information from my experience.
Now for food, when in Tehran you MUST go to the restaurant called Shandiz. They make the best Kebab in town, every sort, and their lamb chops are the
best ive every had. Ill see if I can find you the address (i dont know my way round Tehran, its absolutely massive). Ive heard from friends that kebab
around Tabriz (lots of is very good too, although ive never tried it myself.
Iran has a great love for bread (nun), therefore you must try a variety that are on offer such as Barbari, Toftoon, Lavash, and Sangak. Get some
'fateer' - a type of sweet bread which is brilliant for breakfast with a glass of milk or as a snack.
Sweets - most sweet shop are decent ('shirini foorooshi' in farsi), so help yourself at any opportunity. The bamia are really nice, but also the
baklava, which are very different from the arabic & turkish sort, but still delicious. Get some 'Gaz' from Esfahan, a type of iranian nougat with
pistachios that they have in iran and is originally from Esfahan.
You can also find excellent pistachios and dates, Iran is one of the biggest producers in the world for both so eat up.

I was mostly joking about the food...the original thread was really about music.
But anyway, thank you for all those kind advices, food seems to be another cultural monument I shouldn't miss there!
I will let you know if I have things of interest to share with you around music at my return...and if needed with a nice picture of chelo kebab.
