Rosette design.
I have designed this rosette in order to use on my oud that is almost done. I have managed to recycle some elements from various images and graphics
available online and combined them to make the design.
I would appreciate the feedback and any suggestions that would make this rosette less fragile.
Also, If anyone needs the file in vector graphics please let me know.

The model is nice but its better integrate some pices of it . otherwise there would be small crackeds so by the time goes it gets clapping .

Thank you Veysel. I know some parts are very thin and might brake I will work on an updated design that is somewhat less fragile. I will post it soon
too.

I am still editing the file and haven't finished yet. I couldn't do too much work this past weekend. I will try to finish updating it soon and will
upload the vector graphics to this thread so that people can download it.

Well done FastForward! it doesn't look thin .. it looks just wonderful . you may use hard wood (rose wood for example) and it won't be fragile.

I think there is some room for improving it. I plan on using 1/8" (3.17mm) plywood and I would rather be sure than spend a few hours cutting it and
end up regretting it.

OK, it's going to sound like heresy, but. . .
any thoughts about a synthetic material instead of wood?
Mircata? Delrin?
I know that it's going to rub purists the wrong way, but there are some superb ouds out there with synthetic rosettes. They can be very stable, very
easy to work with, and very light weight.

I am ok with using Micarta but couldn't find a place to buy small pieces. You have to buy it in large sheets. Since, I am only making a single oud
that was not a feasible solution.

It's used a lot for knife handles, so in the past I have bought it from knife supplies stores.
I did a quick internet search: alphaknifesupply.com has some smaller pieces at reasonable prices. I like micarta, although I am not crazy about it.
Decent enough in appearance.
I am very interested in trying some delrin on my next rosettes. I think (I have to double check on this), that some oud makers are starting to use
this material for the rosettes--If you are familiar with guitars, Tortex guitar picks are made out of delrin.
I am looking forward to seeing your finished product whatever you use.
The design is just amazing.

I am in the process of ironing out some of the details on my rosettes which I will have laser cut by a shop in my town.
Do you know if this delrin material cut well with a laser or does it melt on the edges?

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know that laser engraving can really burn the edges of micarta. In my limited experience, it just was not
worth it.
I hate to say this, but if you go to an engraving shop and look through some of the plastics that they use there commonly, I would bet that you could
come up with something that looks decent. I have done that. Here's a pic of my second oud:

Those rosettes are laser cut on cheap plastic from an engraving shop. My design, though. Unfortunately, I put the large rosette in backwards, so
there is a slightly different look on the bottom two than on the center one--but, you get the idea.
If you look at a Karibyan--those rosettes on all of the later Karibyan's are plastic. And the ouds can't be beat. The rosettes are just so
lightweight--the sound board resonates as if they were not even there.
Delrin is supposed to be fairly easy to work with, though--easier than bone or horn. Let us know what you find out.
