travel with my oud with Ryanair...
Hi folks!
In few days I´ll travel to Madrid with Ryanair...I have my oud with me...do you know if Ryanair makes troubles to take my oud with me like hand bag?
I have the oud with Sukar hard case...
I´m afraid!!!!

Hi Michoud,
I had no trouble travleing with Jamil's case.
If the case fits in the "trial box" they usually have at either the counter or at the gate, you should have no problems.

Make sure that you get some stuff to protect it , just in case they don't allow it on the plane. Even some clothes will work. I did that once flying
from Dubai to the US.

Thanks to customer pressure, our Australian national carrier has just changed its policy to allow 'small' instruments as carry on baggage. The
allowable dimensions are a little difficult to understand, but I think it may be possible now to carry on a Turkish sized oud in a soft bag.

just for the good hope :)
few month ago i marched onboard a tukish airlines plane with an oud in a sukar case, cumbus, and a violin in a hard case. 
they all fit in the upper closets..

Jonatan83 when I traveled from Syria to Spain (with syrian airlines) or the opposite I had no problems, sometimes with oud, buzuk and banjo!!
But I´m afraid with Ryanair, the people say that they always make troubles...

Hello all,
during the past I travelled sometimes not only with one Aoud. Here are my experiencies - always intrumnents in hard cases, and one was big!:
Easy jet: no problem with abig case in the cabin, and they did not weight it!
Syrian Airlines, most uncomplicated line
Suiss: Basel - London two instruments in the cabin plus small luggage
Egypt airlines no problem to have 2 instruments in the cabin. The only problem was the german person at the checkin in Frankfurt which did not
allow 2. Later in the plane the steward said why not both?
Lufthansa: no problem with one instrument + laptop bag
The checkin seems to be more restrictive. But they are able to ask the crew, and I have the impression that they are more flexible. Insist on this
option.

I travelled to Germany with Easyjet last week with Faruk Turunz Oud in a hard case took it inside the plain , no trouble at all , not a single
question asked.

I took only the oud , both ryan air and easyjet work on a strict policy regarding hand luggage, only one allowed to take inside the plane , they even
ask ladies to put their handbag inside the luggage , so you are not allowed to take both the oud and a hand luggage at the same time i am afraid

Welcome to the yellow plastic kingdom.
You could try to take it on board but I think they're pretty tough and their overhead lockers are tiny. Officially, they tell you you need to check
musical instruments in, pay a surcharge and they handle it through a special check-in process for musical instruments, sporting equipment and other
fragile items - they usually send you off to a special area to hand it over.
While I hate this policy of pretending your ticket is cheap and then slapping on a surcharge for every little thing, this system has always worked
fine for me, and I think they do take care with instruments though I'd make sure you use a hard case.
You should have an option to tick in the online booking process for taking a musical instrument. You can still access this after you've booked by
editing the booking and paying the extra (there should be a link on your e-ticket). You can also pay when you check in (though I think they've
abolished check in in some airports now?) but it costs more.

Here's my trick, its always worked but its risky I suppose.
Do not check in the oud.
If someone at check-in asks you about it you say, " I telephoned the airline before to check I could take my oud on board, I gave them the
measurements and the said yes but it would be at the discretion of the cabin crew "
This will get you to the depature lounge, if boarding card personell question you about it you say the same to them.
This will get you to the aircraft, if cabin crew question you then say the same to them.
This has always worked for me. Best take a soft bag instead if you have one, its less bulky and less chance of you being 'forced' to put it in the
hold.
(If the oud is too big for the overhead then the crew will take it and put it with their own stuff in their own cupboard)

Call me cynical, but I wouldn't trust my BODY to Ryanair, let alone something as valuable as my oud.
