The charm of dead strings
Two years ago I put gut strings on this oud by Leon Stanbuli (DD GG CC), the wounds are even older. For 2-3 months the sound was great and then they
died.
Ordering gut is complicated and I kept delaying ordering. it is not a oud I play very often, and then I started to find a charm to this sound.
the strings do not really resonate, they are so old and tired that they cannot really vibrate, they have also some buzz, but there is something earthy
to this sound, it is like it is only generated by the wood, no air, Mr Helmholtz is not working here.
May be we got used to what we define as a perfect sustained and resonant sound that we forgot the charm of imperfection.
Is it just me ?

Hey Alami,
Not only for oud. In cumbus, dead metal strings have their charm too. In fact new strings sound sometimes too sturdy.
By the way, great piece.
