WHAT IS THIS INSTRUMENT?

http://www.mondomix.com/fr/show-video6211.htm

does anyone know what this instrument is, the sort of simple drone instrument the lead singer is plucking on? This band is from Comoro Islands in Indian ocean.

Thanks!!

I wonder could it be a descendant of an EKTAR?

Yeah that's a jejy voatavo. Some musicologists think that class of African instruments gave rise to the Indian tube-zither vīṇā.

Seems to be an ancestor of the Brazilian berimbau.

Yes, that's what I was told by an indologist friend in Italy. I don't know what the evidence is that it came from Africa to India and not the other way around, though.
