monstrous bass oud

Check out the size of this oud. It doesn't appear in the video until about 1:12

Very interesting ... I always was thinking, that something like this is missing in oud ensembles.

It would be interesting to learn more about this bass oud.

that guy used to play bass in a mariachi band, and just can't quit the habit...;)

all joking aside, large sized ouds have been discussed before in the forum, here is one thread for example:

Thanks Matthew or the hint.

BTW ... a german guitar luthier builds the largest acoustic bass guitar of the world:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JN5v8oBv3w

I once had the chance to play it in a shop ... fantastic instrument with a huge sound, but you need long arms ;)

PS: Though the other discussion about oud sizes is very interesting, it only shows, that oud ensembles are relatively uncommon and maybe influenced by the West, but so far we still know nothing about the origin of the bass oud.

I'm also interested in it's tuning, the kind of strings, etc..

Does anybody know more?

This bass oud has been custom made by Mr. Nazih Ghadban for the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music. And I think that cello strings are used on this bass oud, as per what Mr. Ghadban once told me. I let Mr. Ghadban correct the accuracy of this info.

Best!

Wow, thanks for the info.

It would be great, if Master Nazih could share more details ... very interesting!

I hope he is healthy again ... he had an OP last year.
