Enharmonic modulations

Hi,

is it acceptable to perform enharmonic modulations like, for instance, moving from Hijaz to Saba on the same tonic while identifying the F sharp of Hijaz with the G flat of Saba ?

Of course these notes are not exactly at the same pitch but the same could be said for the third degree of Rast and the tonic of Sikah, and, nevertheless, in the latter case this is a pretty common modulation.

thanks !

Dan

It's possible to modulate between hijaz and saba, but I don't think you can use the Gb/F# to do it.

From saba to hijaz, I would probably use the lower C to modulate. From hijaz to saba is more challenging, I would probably modulate to bayati first. (using G as a pivot).

But I'm no expert, so take that with several grains of salt.

you can re-emphazie the tonic D of Hijaz and then proceed to Saba. You can also recognize that the decending scale of Hijaz-D is Nahawand-G. Like oudist said, you can develop the upper part of the scale and use A as a pivot point and descend with Saba using "G flat." Once you're on Maqam Saba, you can also eploit that this maqam has a chord Hijaz-F as one of it secondary chords.
