Hi I'm new and I'd love to buy an Oud, but no tourist quality, are these instruments have interesting sound ?
I mean the rosewood / spruce is already gone, and I'd love to buy the other spruce one (4), but I want to be sure, I put my money in a quality instrument, I'm not aware about how to recognize a good instrument from a bad instrument, only the tonewoods, I need projection and rosewood /spruce (in guitar) is a good combination.

If you can give me few advices, to convince me, I'll go for it !

Thanks

Hi I'd like to buy the Oud #4 but I'm a beginner, I just don't know how to judge a descent Oud, I only know the tonewoods and some interesting combination like rosewood/Spruce for sound projection .
I'm looking for an Good Oud, though I know I can't put more than 700€.
Any advices ?
Thanks !!

Take the rosewood oud yourself, if it's the wood combination you like. I already have a rosewood oud, that Sabassi built in fall 2009.

So my comment was an insider joke addressed to Samir.

I absolutely love this combination of rosewood body and spruce soundboard, because it creates exactly the sound I like, a very warm smooth bass and clear trebbles.

But that's a matter of taste. Some people for example prefer walnut bowls.

Hi Lixir, welcome to the forums!

I was in the same situation as you in fall 2009. I read a lot in the forums and on the well known oud sites to learn more about ouds and to find the sound I like.

Then I visited Samir and bought one of his newly built ouds ... he had two at that time, both with a spruce top, but one with a walnut bowl and the other one of rosewood. I prefered the rosewood for it's warmer bass.

I bet he will soon post videos of the ouds, you see in this thread ... he always did it ... then you'll see/hear, that his ouds sound great.

Read the forums and you'll see, that with your budget you only have two alternatives ... wait for on offer of a used oud in the forums or check out, if you can get a Shukar, which might not be easy currently, when we see, what happens in Syria.

My advice is: Stay away from cheap Ebay ouds and first wait for the videos of the Sabbassi ouds. If you like their sound and are still undecided, ask for more photos.

Thank you guys for the nice comments:

Lixir, Sorry my friend the oud nr 4 is Sold yesterday night.
The Paduk/walnut or the walnut with red cedar have a warmer sound and higher projection as known with cedar. I'm not sure if you have folowed the building process of many of my ouds. this are professional ouds(I hate to say that).
As Chris said, cheap ouds from ebay or some unkown place are waist of money, even if you are a biginner.
If you decide to buy from someone else, check everything, history of the wood, ebony finger board will last forever and clear the sound under the tip of your finger, braces under the soundboard etc.

regards

Hi Lixir

In my opinion start with a 'proper' oud, anyone calling an oud 'beginner' or 'learner' is generally not worth buying. You'll have a job falling in love with such an instrument, and God forbid, if you decide you don't take to the oud (how can I say such a thing :) ) you will be more likely be able to sell it pretty easily here (as long as you look after it).

Your budget will get you a Sabbassi oud - what a great way to start.

Cheers

Leon

For Sam,

Quote from the other thread about the ouds of Samir

Hello Samir, A friend of mine brought back from Casablanca an oud made by Khalid Belhaiba. The bowl is made of a very nice walnut. Is it the same one you are using on yours. If yes it is a very nice one. Can't wait to see the work in progress. Robert

And the answer of Samir

Yes it is the same. it's funny I bought it for khalid myself for both of us from Marrakech. Moroccan walnut is so beautiful and flamed is very rare. the Moroccan walnut is rarely find outside the county because the tree is an Endangered species, so a very small quality is sold.
