Sunbati taqsims music scores
Where can I find scores of his taqsims (Rast, Kurd, Hijaz, Nahawand, Bayati)?
I'm planning on improving my sight reading skills and I'm guessing it would be fun and amazing to play one of his taqsims.

Hey Dan,
I never knew these transcriptions existed, do you, or anyone on the forum know how good/accurate they are?. If they are 'as played' by Sunbati then I
think they are worth the $37 for pdf download. I may get them if I can get a bit more info on the quality of them. Some notated taqsims are
transcribed poorly, simplified or inaccurate. One guess's they would need to be spot on for a university thesis, but if they are spot on then why I
they not well known transcriptions and published openly, after all Sunbati is a legend!!!.

These taqasim were done by Kareem Roustom for his graduate work. They seem quite well done to me. The approach is rather academic (as one would
expect), but certainly worthwhile.
I asked Kareem why he hasn't published them widely, but he didn't seem interested in the prospect.

Maybe we can convince him? I would pay $10 for the PDF, but not $37. If a good handful agree to do the same (and there is no overriding copyright, and
educational use cannot be invoked), he can authorize the forum to charge via paypal for download. He might realize that if he doesn't do something
like this, ultimately these transcriptions will find their way into de facto public domain, without his perhaps worthwhile analysis, and no lunch
money.

I have seen this thesis. It has a complete note-for-note transcription of the 6 taqasim, along with an analysis of the maqam modulations. Each taqsim
is notated in 5-8 pages. These are also chapters on the life of A-Sunbati. I think the quality of the transcriptions are excellent, and a good way to
follow the taqsim if you want to learn them. However as sight reading exercises, they might be useful for the melodic aspect, but not for rhythmical
part.

I imagine those transcriptions are from "taqasim album" ... it seems to be the only one solo album available from Sunbati...
I contacted the author of the thesis, he told me that the thesis will be available from his own website this spring.

I just had a really quick look at this thesis and it looks incredibly informative, I think the transcriptions and analysis look really good (after
just a quick look).
I t appears that looking at the transcriptions (and analysis) while listening to the recording and/or looking while try to play along could be very
educational.
The $37 for the PDF seems reasonable to me, it would be a lot more if it was put out as a book by an academic publishing house.
BTW- Proquest stuff is FREE for those who are students or professors or instructors at universities whose library subscribes to pro quest you log in
to pro quest via the website of your university library with the bar code on your
student or faculty card.
