Cuban mahogany / Walnut
I'd like to share with you the new oud i finished yesterday.
The bowl is made of fine cuban mahogany and moroccan flamed dark walnut with maple purfling in between.
finger board is ebony surrounded with cocobolo and maple purfling.
Spruce top
sound hole strips: pear/maple/sycamore(black)
soundboard strips purfling: cocobolo
bridge is flamed swamp ash
walnut pickguard
Lemon wood Hand made rosette (samir abbassi in arabic inside) Special thanks to Alfaraby for the design.
Boxwood pegs
bone: nut and bowl end.
the bowls is 36x49,5cm

This may be your most beautiful work yet in my opinion.
How do you inlay the fingerboard at the edge? Its gorgeous.

Thank you my friend,
I was so concentrated with the oud and it took me more time to build this oud with all the little details and touches.
may be I will make pictures on the next one.
The fingerboard. I first make the ebony fingerboard to exactly fit the oud as normal. then I remove from the 3 sides exact the same amount of ebony,
then I glue the cocobolo and the strip in between using masking tape. I reshape the fingerboard again to the oud and remove the excess cocobolo.
the curvy one is tricky and cocobolo is quickly broken, so I took a big piece and reshape the to curve, glueing and voila. it is lot of precision
work, take a while to make exact fit.

Wow..that is a very stunning instrument Samir...the details are very refined...great choice of woods ...did you have any trouble with the cocobolo
trim as far as getting it to glue up properly?--when I have used it it is very oily and seems to resist some glues...thank you for posting this and
for all the beautiful work you do... it is always inspiring..

Thanks Guys, very encouraging.
Teslim, the cocobolo is indeed very olily but cleaning the wood with some alcohol before puting the glue helps a lot. and once the glue is cured the
join in unbreakable.
The colors/combination is chosen before I starting the build.
I had in mind something: red/brown oud looking with nice contrasting color: black walnut.
The Cuban mahogany is a wonderful wood , unfortunatly it is is considered an endangered species so this very old piece is the only one I have had.

Dear Sabbassi,
1. Beautiful choice of woods, the bowls walnut grain is truly one of a kind, wow.
2. Your detailed work around the pegbox, is so cool - I love the contrasts in the wood, and the elegant joinery.
3. The bridge, pickguard, and detail at the soundhole end of the fingerboard really makes for a seamless transition.
Thanks for posting the results - each instrument seems to have at least a couple of improvements over the previous one. Congratulations man.
