Ismail Fencioglu - Turkish ud master living in Montreal

Hey guys,

A friend of mine recently went to Montreal to perform on kanun at an event there, and met up with a really great ud player and singer from Turkey. His playing reminds me a lot of Beken, but with some definite differences in attack and style of runs. The quality is not as great as on the cd b/c I had to compress it, but you'll get the idea.

Anyway, enjoy this track by Ismail Fencioglu, I hope we'll be hearing more from him soon. :D

Wow...

I must get this CD...!

Really great dynamics, he does remind me of Beken in how clean he is - lots of other subtle differences though. He has great clean tremolo but its the exquisite control over the dynamics in the phrases that is so impressive.

Where can one find the CD !!!

Hey,

That's a good question, I was given a few tracks by my buddy. I'll try and find out if it's in circulation.

I'm glad you liked it, he's really something.

Take care,

Hey,

Thanks Jonathan, these are great! It's too bad the ud isn't more featured though.

I know that this is an old posting, but i recently came across this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RZu2BtTi6A&feature=related and needless to say i am very impressed with his playing. From what i gather he is also a luthier, i think this oud he is playing sounds amazing. If anyone owns one of his ouds i would like to hear your thoughts.
Thank you

Yeah,

He is a ridiculous player, and actually more well known as a singer in Turkey if I'm not mistaken.

His ouds sound absolutely wonderful, and look very nice too!

Take care,

I bought one of his cds 'Fenci's Blues' a few years ago and the oud playing on that is just brilliant, really exuberant like he can't help himself :D - I'd like to hear him on his own. He has a very good voice also.

Nice playing from Ismail. Hated the harmonica, musicians should know by now what not to mix together. Harmonica should be banned from this type of music.
And why does the Harmonica player have to wear the jewish hat in performance, I think with a name like Rosenthal we can tell he's jewish enough...

Well, he probably wears the yamuka all the time, so he didn't feel any need to take it off for the performance.

I wasn't crazy about the harmonica/oud mix much myself, but that sort of thing happens all the time. I do hope we can hear more of Fencioglu in traditional settings...hopefully in the New York area... :)

Video

Hey,

Don't know if anyone already saw this:

http://www.nme.com/video/id/iQWIGpvYU6w/search/hakk%C4%B1

Notice how he doesn't really rest the oud on his legs, but holds it between his arm and torso most of the time? He does some very difficult runs like this. Very cool, and difficult I think.

Take care,

mavrothis

Hmmm...this sounds very tempting.

I will be away for a while this summer, but maybe in the fall? I would love to come up to Montreal and spend some time with you and whoever else might be around and in the mood for some oud.

We should absolutely get together my friend. I'll let you know when it might work for me, and also feel free to email me if there are any dates that would work best for you.

:)

Shukran!
