Great instrument, the bass oud!! And there's a lot of innovative stuff which could be done with it, played alongside the traditional oud. Maybe a duo,
oud and bass oud. Or an oud orchestra, a' la Nasser Shamma, with a couple of bass ouds for the bottom end........very cool......

An "idea" for oud players. A six string fretless electric bass! It's easier to find than a six string bass oud.
These guys carry some nice fretless Chinese basses, like SX, Brice and Douglas. They seem a little low in inventory at the moment. This Brice model is
really nice for the price.

They sometimes also have nice short scale fretless basses, like the one on the left (with fretline marker inlays), that cost all of $129.
My 6 string is a Douglas, nice rosewood fingerboard, electronics home-augmented with piezos under the bridge. I tune it the same as my ouds, C, E, A,
d, g, c.
They even have a lovely fretless guitar

How loud is that double-bass oud? Is it usable in an ensemble?

but of course. it's from the ensemble of Naseer Shamma, together with the bass oud.
i tried it on the rehearsal together with 10 ouds for the moment. sounds excellent.

I chose the Godin A5 (5-string) fretless instead, which can be played both, acoustic and electric. And you can tune it CFADG without problems ... default is
BEADG. Downside is, that baby isn't cheap.
BTW ... in MY opinion the bass oud shouldn't be played with a risha, but plucked with the fingers like a double bass. But my taste is special  ... I even play a conventional oud that way, similar to a lute ... not always, but
I often like it.

...this thing I wonder about is how is this bass-oud suppose to produce the frequencies that those double bass strings are tuned to. Compare the
soundboard size and the air space size with this "bass-oud" to a regular double bass. Notice any difference?

Sorry, no offence intended ... but forget these standard acoustic bass guitars ... they are not loud enough and most sound like a down tuned guitar
If you want a good acoustic bass guitar, you need a Stoll (german luthier) ... THAT thing rocks. I tested it in a shop ... it's soooo great ... a pocket sized double bass

I generally stand behind my first comment on this thread which were that for thick heavy double-bass strings you NEED a huge soundboard and a huge air
space. Otherwise what happens is that the strings resonance is only being amplified in it's upper harmonics - the fundamental and lower harmonics
basically don't exist (so what's the point?).
Now having said that there is one AMAZING exception to this - and that is the Maroccan gimbri! I can never figure how the hell this thing produces
SO much bass with such a tiny little SB and AIR?!! What seems to be happening here is that the fundamental is in fact not particularly low -but the
instrument accentuates the ultra low frequencies so the resulting tone sounds much lower than the actual fundamental! No THAT'S a bass!
