Just bought an Oud - need help

Hi

I have just bought an Oud, its a Syrian/Lebanses one I believe, with 12 strings. So I guess this is an Arabic model? See attached. Is this correct? The bottom C strings are quite loose, is this normal.

I've learnt how to tune it now, but now I dont where to start. I can play the guitar and ukulele, however is there a guide as to where the notes are on the fretboard? Eg for a major/minor scale.

Any guide for arpeggios, basic guides, easy tunes to start with? I've seen the FAQ guide, however I cant seem to find the above.

Teachers in NW/central London?

Please help...

cheers

Mike

Attab Haddad is a great London-based player and a former student of Naseer Shamma. Not sure if he teaches, but I would imagine he'd be able to point you toward one.

If this oud has 12 strings and by "bottom" you mean bass/lower in pitch, and the bass course is very slack there is a good chance the set of strings on there is intended for "F tuning " and they would be tuned FF and all the other courses tuned a fourth higher. Are the other strings slack? Do you have access to a micrometer?

You can download AP Tuner for example and then find out where you have to press your fingers to get the right notes. I think that's the most important for the beginning and it is quite good to manage with a tuner software.

What would you say is the best book to learn Oud technique on, is the Maria Toschich book any good?

I am an accomplished guitar player if that helps!

thanks

Best money (IMHO) you can spend to help w/ learning oud: OudProf's Learn Maqamat on the Oud version 2.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEARN-MAQAMAT-on-OUD-VERSION-2-OUD-BASICS-/...

Make sure you have a new set of strings. Daniel Mari sets are inexpensive and good.

Mike,
welcome to the wonderful world of ouds. Here's a teacher who might interest you: Soufian Saihi. He's quite well-known on the London "world music" scene, he's got a myspace page http://www.myspace.com/soufiansaihi and here's one of his videos, I think he's performing at the exit gate of one of the London Underground stations http://youtu.be/fS1uKdZ8vjU and here's his e-mail. soufiansaihi@hotmail.co.uk <soufiansaihi@hotmail.co.uk>; I wanted to take lessons from him as he was going to commute from London to Portsmouth, but then he couldn't come to Portsmouth anymore because there weren't enough students to make it worth his while, so I presume he now teaches just in the Greater London area.
I am based in the South East of England, but I am moving back to London in a couple of weeks, if you need anything including info or any help at all, please do let me know, I'd be happy to oblige.

Iskandar Baramili is the name of the owner of the music shop of the same name. He also has a shop in "Dekwaneh" near Slaf street in Beirut. He used to be (maybe still is) a music (oud) teacher. However, according to my knowledge, he isn't a luthier and doesn't make ouds. He buys ouds mostly from Syria and changes the label, the label mention his name as Alfaraby translated ( shop, teaching, selling and repairing). He's not claiming to be a Luthier. However, it would be better if he didn't hide/remove the initial oud label. The information he provides is consequently misleading.

His son (I think his name is Georges) is claimed to be a good electric guitar player and has won a silver medal in the same category in Studio Al Fann, around 10 years ago.

Hi Richard,

I am pretty familiar with with Aswat and their last few directors. The San Francisco Bay Area seems to have many decent journeyman oud players, but unlike NY or LA (or Chicago, at least while they had Issa Boulos), we don't seem to have anyone of "ustad" caliber.

On another topic: Did you move from WA to OR?

All the best,
"Udi" John
