Farouk Shehata (the elder) oud for sale

Farouk, student of Gameel Georges and the father of Maurice, made this oud in 1993 towards the end of his life. The body is of walnut, the face of cedar and the fingerboard is of rosewood. It is in excellent condition, glorious of sound and easy action. Comes with a custom fitted case.
$1,700

Looking at its beautiful condition (and what a beauty!), I'd guess the soundboard is "finished", not raw wood. Do you know what it was coated with? Do you know if those are the original pegs? Are you the original owner?

As far as I know, everything is original on the oud. The pegs certainly look as if they were meant for this oud, with little pearls on their tops. I have seen pictures of several ouds by Farouk and they all have various similar features to this one; some exactly the same. One characteristic is the elegant upward curve of the pegbox.
As far as the finish on the top is concerned, both Farouk and Maurice put finish on their tops, but Farouk's finish is comparatively very thin as is the soundboard itself. Perhaps only a wash of a sealer. The oud responds very freely and evenly all across the strings.

I got the oud a number of years ago from a very respected member of this group, Mavrothis. If I remember it right, he got it in Cairo. He thinks very highly of this instrument.

Thank you very much for your interest.

Cedar is what Mav told me. It is of a different shade from the back which IS walnut. It is hard to transmit the real colors through photos.

Anyway, this is all I know.

I forgot to mention that Mike's oud made by Farouk also has a cedar top. See "My ouds" on this website.
