Hana Nahhat 1910 Restoration

This project started with 2 missing ribs, no face at all and a broken peg box. The soundboard is using German spruce bought from Vitali Imports in LA in 1968, when it was already 10 years old. The braces were gleaned from the back supports of a 100 year old upright piano. I hope it sounds as good as it looks...so far so good.

The label:

"Hanna Nahat Work in Damascus, Syria (April 11, 1910) No. 294"

Looks like a hand-written original label .
Non-solved mystery: Hanna was a part of Nahat Bro. at that time. How come he managed to make 294 ouds back in 1910 ?
Well, I think I know nothing about Nahat legacy & I'm pretty serious.

Hard work you still have to do, Doc.
Good luck

Yours indeed

Interesting to see the carved out neck and end blocks. This would seem to allow a greater surface reinforcement area of the ribs without increasing weight or reducing bowl volume or adding significantly to the joint surface area below the bridge?
How does the neck block carving look Richard? Could you post images for information?

Good luck with the rebuild

The neck and tail blocks are larger than usual, and the scooping out is left with the gouge tool marks, not smoothed out at all. I believe it was done to maximize the volume of the bowel for added bass reflex, as well as to provide more support surface area both for the ribs and the soundboard. Another benefit is to reduce the overall weight of the oud. There is more surface to support the soundboard below the bridge at the tail block which may be the most advantageous characteristic. As the face is directly attached to a wider surface of the tail block, a larger area of the soundboard would be excited by the torsion of the bridge, rather than dissipating in the unsupported area outside the tail block surface.
I am not able to provide a detail photo of the interior as I just glued the face on.

First strings installed, yet unfinished. After the strings stretch in I'll make a sound file for y'all (it sounds scary good so far)

I am applying the finish now, the sound file will have to wait until it's done. It'll be worth the wait, believe me...this oud is amazing.

Sounds amazing! Nicely done - especially considering what rough shape the old girl was in when she came under your expert care...

I think it may be his 294th oud altogether. 294 ouds in one year? that's almost one a day...I don't think so. He started around 1900, right? So 294 is about 30 ouds/year. still pretty good numbers, but at least realistic. Maybe the number doesn't mean anything really, just a joke on us?
