Custom Hard Cases
These cases have 1/4 in (8mm) plywood structure, with 1 inch (25mm) 1 pound polystyrene foam cushioning for maximum shock protection. The faceted
shape allows a precise fit so the oud does not rattle around inside the case, and is structurally stronger and more rigid than a round shape. The oud
is secured by pads at the neck and below the bridge so the soundboard do not have any pressure on it. The perimeter of the case has a overlapping lip
to seal the oud against humidity and temperature variations.. The case is closed with 3 draw latches.
A precise fit is achieved by measuring the oud/s length, width and height, then 1/2inch (12mm) is added for minimal clearance.

Can you share the weight of the one in the photo?
Also, any plans on incorporating a compartment within the neck rest or elsewhere?

This case weighs 5 pounds. A compartment can be added under the neck at an added cost of $25 USD. A compartment would also weaken the case. The
structure under the neck adds a great deal of stiffness. I don't see a real advantage to adding a compartment, spare strings and mizrabs, etc. can be
stored in the space under the pegbox.

Because every oud is different in size and shape, each case must be custom fitted to avoid damage by movement inside a case that is too tight or too
loose.
Soft cases only protect the finish from scratches, and provide absolutely no protection for the structure of the oud. A soft case also gives a false
sense of security, if the owner doesn't realize that the oud is just as fragile as if it were in no case at all.
Fiberglass molded cases are flexible, so any compression pressure is transferred to the oud. These cases only come in a few sizes, so unless the case
was made for your oud, finding a proper fit is difficult if not impossible. They do provide a bit more protection than a soft case, but only for low
impact damage, but not real drop shock protection, definitely not as much as a rigid plywood case with polystyrene foam cushioning.
I have made round shaped plywood cases using bendable plywood, but they are not as rigid as the faceted case. The fit is not as precise as well, since
an oud body outline is not really round. A custom molded plywood case would be good, but the mold could be used for only one size and shaped oud, so
the cost would be prohibitive. The faceted design allows each case to be fitted to each oud, and it is more rigid than a bendable plywood or molded
fiberglass case.
This case provides protection even for shipping and baggage transport. Polystyrene foam provides the best protection against shock damage. That's why
it is used in shipping everything from glassware to tv sets as well as the transport cases used by touring production companies. Soft linings and foam
rubber do not protect the structure of the oud, as the impact shock is simply transferred through to the oud. Polystyrene foam dissipates the impact
shock wave so the oud is not damaged from impact. I have tested this case to simulate dropping it while carrying. The oud inside not only remained
undamaged, but it actually stayed in tune!
