Fingerboard & Nut

Hello folks,
I am new here and have 2 questions :

1: I need to correct the action by putting a second fingerboard on top of the old one--- what kind of wood should it be from?
can I use oak?
2: do I need to alter/change the nut also?

Thanks and sorry for the bad spelling

Welcome! You sure you can't correct this more simply, e.g. at the bridge?

People have reported negative changes in the tone and resonance when gluing on another fingerboard out on the body, and it's not entirely straightforward. Is the original fingerboard a short or long one?

You would probably have to level the resulting fingerboard, and of course raise the nut.

Oak is not normally used for fingerboards, you probably want a harder wood, like at least a decent rosewood, if you can't use ebony.

@fernandraynaud,
nothing can be done at the bridge! The original fingerboard is a short one.
I thougt oak was a very hard wood-type. I can not get rosewood easy hier in germany:( and ebony is too dark.

Still dont understand why a second fingerboard could have a negative effect in the ton?

Thanks for the quick reply

Hallo muhssin

Muhssin

Hello Muhsin,

I think it will be better to write in english. I suppose the other members will be interested in the solving of this problem too.

Looking at the pic it shows:
-- the action is too high, 4 mm? 5 mm?
-- the neck seems to be thicker at the pegbox than at the body, or is it only an optical effect? Can you please measure that?

If so the second point gives the option to make the neck thinner and lower the action a bit, but only a bit as removing 2 mm at the nut gives only less than 1 mm at the body.
You could make a precice drawing of the situation, and then you can imagine which options you have.

Some say, applying a fingerboard on the soundboard will effect the sound. May be, but one should not forget, that there are existing Aouds which have fingerboards going until the rose. I would say for this instrument which is a simpler one and which seems to have a damage at the ribs too, the effect will not be so much.
I would say planing down the existing fingerboard a bit and applying a new one which is going towards the rose will produce a perfect action that makes it easy for you to play the instrument.

Another option is to remove the neck, change the angle and reglue the neck. But this an operation with lot of work and costs.

You want to make the repair by yourself? If not you are invited to visit me in my workshop here in the south during a weekend. Doing this you could have a view on my instruments. Actually I have here 3 different models to play.
Or may be you like to come to my summeracademy in august. Have a look at the website which is given in my signature below.

If you llike to get a fingerboard, I can sell you a rosewood piece. You only have to give me the measurements and I can send it tomorrow togather with the strings you have ordered in my shop.

best regards

Matthias

Hey muhssin

Selbstdarstellungstrieb ?

Fritz
