Reeally need measures of turkish oud

Hello Oud lovers!

as you may have readed in other threads, a luthier friend of mine will build me a turkish oud.
However, I can't find the measures of the body and neck to use as a guide, plus there isn't any turkish oud where I live.
I only know that a 58,5 cm scale lenght is commonly used.
He knows how to get the sound, we only need a body and neck measure guide.

If someone that owns one can measure it, it would be a great help.

Thanks a lot to everybody!

Luan

As it happens, I have my Turkish oud handy and a tape measure:
58.4cm scale length (length of vibrating strings)
68.8cm total length (where the fretboard starts, doesn't include nut)
19.5cm neck length (where the fretboard starts, doesn't include nut; measured to where the neck joins with the body)
37cm width in the thickest part (near bridge)
18 or 19cm depth of bowl (hard to measure accurately as I can't get tape measure through the sound hole. had to eyeball it)

This is an oud made by Alto in 2010 in Izmir, Turkey

Just one more measure I need if you can help me: The distance between strings and between courses
I know that the way to measure them is from the center of the string to the next one.

THANKS!!!

You will also need to know the typical geometry of a modern Turkish oud in order to build one. I previously posted a typical geometry (derived from Turkish sources) here on the forum.

A more detailed description can be found here at the bottom of page 1

Thanks a lot Jdowning!
I will read that thread carefully.
Do you have the usual measures used for courses and strings distance in turkish ouds?

Thanks a lot again!!

I do not have any string spacing measurements for a Turkish oud but I suppose that they would not differ greatly from those of an Arabic oud where centre to centre distance between strings at the nut is about 1.5 mm course spacing and about 5 mm to 5.5 mm between courses and at the bridge 3 to 4 mm course spacing and 10 to 13 mm or so between courses. Perhaps those forum members who play Turkish oud could measure and post the string spacings on their instruments but - no doubt - there will be some variation and no standard measurement.

For your oud to sound like a Turkish oud the sound board will also have to be braced correctly. If you visit the website of Dincer Dalkilic and check out his photo sequence showing oud construction you will see the bracing layout that he uses. Note that on Turkish ouds, the brace located just below the two small sound holes is often reduced significantly in depth at the centre. Note also the cut outs in the neck block and the 'fan' bracing at the bridge and below the neck block.
Note that Dincer uses the very ancient but efficient technique for making a bowl - hot hide glue with paper strips glued on the outside of the bowl to (temporarily) tightly hold everything together as work proceeds to completion.
