new oud player

Hello,
I just bought my first oud the other day. Please see attachment. It is an Egyptian model. It needs a little work, however, I build acoustic instruments so I can handle it.:D My question is: My oud has 12 strings. All I ever see are 11 string ouds. I am trying to buy new strings, and they only come in 11's. ???

Hello vequinox,

Do you mean that there are 12 holes in the bridge? If so, this is typical of oud bridges. You can just string up the 11 strings and then you're set. Check out Just Strings for reasonably priced oud string sets. I've tried the La Bellas and the Thomastiks. I prefer the Thomastiks because they come with wound D strings. The Arabic La Bella set has nylon Ds.

Good luck,
Mike

Vequinox,

Maybe your oud has the F treble strings. Is that the sixth course you are talking about? I think you'll have to special order those strings if you like this setup. A modern day oud tuning for an Arabic oud is CFADGC or CGADGC. The bass C is usually a single string.
