This oud maker is actually iraqi and lives in Syria.
His ouds are similar to Ibrahim Alsukar.
I would say they are most likely for intermediate level

All the best

I got - it it is quite nice for the price I played it for several hours today.

It is unusual to me on a few points.

1) it has a nice arabic sound but is smaller (body and scale length) than my turkish oud.
(I always thought that arabic sound came from the larger body and scale, must be some other factor???)

2) it has a guitar style truss rod.

3) cheap but with a decent sound and on the whole rather playable.

I need to get a bone nut cut for it as the original is wood and the grooves have the courses to close together in first position. Makes it too difficult to do that thing where you pedal the tonic bass string with triplets on the treble.

If anyone knows anything more about these ouds I would be interested.

Hi Majnuun

I will take some pictures and post here later, can some one direct me to instructions on how to post pics.

I have looked for a website for this maker and have not found any with a google search in English.

Just lots of stuff about the Ziryab that the oud company is probably named after.

I really like the shape of bowl. Nice and round.

In terms of Arabic sound. I've read that it also has something to do with the thickness of soundboard. According to what I've been told, the soundboard of Turkish Ouds are lighter, even to the effect that they will shave down the braces. Also the weight and material of the bridge is important according to this thread...

http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=14610

It is probably safe to say if Zeyrab is a Syrian maker, he is following those guidelines for bridge density and weight.

I have no expertise in this, but only my gut feeling says is that the roundness between the soundhole and neck has some contributing factor to sound as well. I hope someone will enlighten me. I'm kind of obsessed with this...

Nevertheless, I would love to hear that Oud. Please post a video soon!

You are right Jaffa road, looks like a Truss rod. First time I see one like it. I think its probably a truss rod designed for a mandoline or other short neck instrument. How is the weight of the neck?

Not the same as the Sukkar neck joint by the way.

Samir please explain the sukar mechanism.

something that looks like a truss rod but is not?

Before this oud I have only seen truss rods on Fadi and Godin ouds.

It does not seem to need an adjustment so I am not going to mess with it (it aint broke so I aint fixing i)

This oud is growing on me and I will post video or audio hopefully next week.

I have seen and tried a couple of these ouds. Seemed not bad!
Its sound lacks the beauty and richness of instruments made by skilled luthiers, however, the sound is not ugly at all and has a surprising loudness.
