Prepping a cow horn mizrab
Just wanted to say thanks everyone on this forum for helping me buy my first oud. Been playing bouzouki for about 6 years and I felt scared to take
the oud plunge until I read through these posts for a few days.
That being said, i found a place in los angeles that has the cow horn oud blanks from Mid-east.com, and I picked up a few. I sanded down my first one
to a good thin size, but found a bit of the end snapped off when I hit the pick against a table on accident.
What are the solutions to avoid this? Should I soak the mizrab in oil? Or could uneven sanding be the problem here? Would a thinner pick fix the
problem?

Most people soak them in olive oil I think

Mine is as rigid and unfiled as when I first got it. I'm too used to it now, though tremolo could be a tiny bit easier I'm getting used to it. I tried
using an "extra heavy" risha from Oud Strings and it's not heavy enough! I'm just too used to this ultra stiff style now. Though I am curious about
soaking and sanding.
