Risha

Does anyone know where I can aquire some nice rishas? Elie, do you have any of the ones you were selling a while back left over? If not, will you be making new ones any time soon? I've used a risha before made of this gelatin like substance which sounded really nice and was easy to control. Is anyone familiar with this type?

Hi Revaldo29,

If I am remebering correctly, I sold you some didn't I? I mailed 2 of each to you on 11-OCT-04, I hope that you have received them by now?

I haven't made any more since. I will keep you informed if I get more available to sell.

Elie,

Yeah I received them. I gave one pair to someone else and I lost the other one. In the mean time, do you know where else I can get quality rishas?

The only ones I found on ebay are the horn rishas that nile shop sells. I don't really like horn rishas because they are too stiff. It's really kind of bad that there isn't anywhere to go to get quality rishas online. Maybe someone out there who has the resources might consider starting something up.

Delrin rishas

I found a good source for risha material. Harpsichord makers use a kind of synthetic quill material made from Delrin plastic. They sell this in 5 foot strips that are 1 cmm wide - almost perfect for cutting into rishas. Here's a web site for a supplier of Harpsichord supplies:

http://www.fortepiano.com/plectra.htm

Last time I checked this link they were in the process of updating the site so the links were not working properly. You have to phone oder stuff anyway. Call:

1-800-442-6038

Your looking for Thick, Medium Thick and Medium Black Delrin Strips - catalog numbers - 10720, 10725 and 10740 repectively. One 5' strip is $10 US and is enough to make 11-12 risha. You can easily cut them with scissors and sand to smooth the edges. I also wrap the mid section of the finished risha with cloth tape as they are kind of slick and slippery. This is just a personal thing you may find them just fine to hold.

I like the thick ones - they are really sort of medium stiff as risha. The medium thick and medium Delrin strips are more flexible. I think most would find the medium thick ones just right. If you favor soft risha then you want the medium ones, though they do have thinner ones as well!

Thanx Lee,

I think i'm going to order the medium thick. 5 feet is a little more than I need but oh well, I need some good rishas.

Shaping Horn Rishis

It's really not so hard to reduce the thickness of a horn rishi to anything you like. Two methods have worked for me. One is scraping the rishi with a new x-acto blade used like a cabinet scraper. The other is to sand the rishi on 220 or 320 grit sandpaper. Make figure-8 motions while pressing the flat tip on the paper. One advantage of adjusting the thickness of the rishi this way is that each end can have a different stiffness. I make one end very flexible for speed and the other end somewhat stiff for volume.
