Does anybody think this bridge matches with the Oud ? With the design of the top ? I´m not sure to use this bridge ! Perhaps another is nessesary... may be with "wings" ?

Any suggestions ?

Be honest please if the completed bridge is ugly ore doesn´t match...

Hi faggiuols

I deinstalled the prog after "repairing"... both ways didn´t change anything ! I cant explain what´s wrong...

May be I find it out... later... not now...

The pics are visible... that´s enough :-)

Buona notte (I´m very tired after a long day at work and some dates in the late afternoon... and an hour in the workshop...)

What are the original file names of those three .jpeg images that do not currently display as 'thumbnail' previews (post dated 11-9-2014)?

Hello Fritz
I'm glad you ask sincerity to the forum, because I do not like the design of the bridge.
mounted on the soundboard looks like a mouth, too round, I think it would be better to design a more "oriental" ...
honestly when I saw the bridge I thought I would spoil the beauty of the work!
sincerely as always accurate that I speak only of personal aesthetics, as you know I'm no expert oud!

Go with your intuition Fritz, if 1% of you doesn't like it now don't do it, by the time it's glued on it will be too late and you may hate it. Maybe this applies to you but I am like this.

I have taken the liberty of renaming and reposting one of your previously posted 'problematic' image files (renamed to 'Fritz Oud Bridge.jpeg') so that it does not include one or more of the Windows reserved file characters. The thumbnail preview image now appears as intended and all is well!
You might try doing the same thing to the other two images - just to get the hang of it and for practice.

You should not include one or more of the following characters in your image file names to avoid this problem in future

Hi Fritz,
I like this bridge.
The luthier Huosain Sabsaby sometimes makes bridges with that kind of curve.
I post here a few pictures that I found on his facebook.
By the way, there are a lot of pictures of his ouds on his facebook. For me, it's a real museum.

Samir...

You are totally right... and I have to say, I don´t like it on this Oud... may be on another... but this Oud deserves another. more aesthetical bridge. So I decided not to glue it but ask the profs here on the fortum. I was not sure if it´s the right design, and I think it´s not. It takes away some of the elegance of the appearence of the instrument, so far it is now. And ofcourse I would be in trouble when glued on and not matching with the other features.

I will make another one... I have an idea yet... Wait and see :)

It´s very good to have some guys here saying what they really want to say, even when it´s not a "good" critic... but it is !

Your honest words are very important for me (as they would for others I think)

Many thanks to you !

Fritz

Hi you, jdowning

The pics are stored with names like Brücke1 (bridge 1)... without any special characters added. In general my prog saved the files like ever as ordinary jpeg-files, then the appear as thumbnails in the forum when implemented. A few days ago I had the prob first, but I found a way to solve this prob... but I don´t know today what I´ve done...

I tried out many way... giving other names, saving again with other data volume and so on. Nothing had changed the php file appearing in the forum instead of the jpeg-file.

Do you have an idea ?

Kind regards

Fritz

Hey...

again a small answer :

Just in this moment I noticed the german " Ü " in the word I used as a name for the pic... may be this is the reason ?

Brücke... you know ?

Perhaps because this site is originated in english the characters may disturb the file-import ?

(I have to look for other examples where I used identically characters without these prob... if there are some)...

Hi Rob

This bridge isn´t satisfying me... not on this Oud ! Ofcourse, there are many bridges on Ouds with the same or slightly other curves... but they´re matching with the Oud´s face by the original maker. I know Hussain Sabsaby´s Ouds... very nice looking instruments indeed ! But the most bridges of the most Oud-maker are painted black while they are of maple or beech.

I want to use only natural colours, and so not every bridge looks good when in natural finish...

I think, the bridges of Sabsaby are looking good on his Ouds... and the other features are matching with the general looking. I spent a long time looking at his instruments on facebook, real beauties... a lot of them !

I am very sensitive about aesthetics, symmetrics and colours and (sound ofcourse) and many other things... so I hesitated to glue this bridge... now I know why ! :)

Every opinion is importatnt... also your´s... it enables me to have another look on the details...

Have a nice evening :)

Fritz

I need a bit time ofcourse...

Easy enough to test. Attached is the file renamed to 'Fritz Oud Brücke'.

Sure enough, as you can see it is the German Umlaut in your file name that is not accepted - so the file name has been automatically changed for you by one that is acceptable - in php format - and without the desired thumbnail preview image.
There may be other international language symbols that are also invalid for file naming such as ^ and probably the French \ and / accents as well as ç cedilla - I haven't tested those.

All of the three files that you originally uploaded are in JPEG format (right click on an image and check out the image properties).

Can't argue with Microsoft demands and influences. Isn't science wonderful!

Hey... what a quick answer :)

Yes, ofcourse I know the right mouse click... and I was wondering why despite the image was not seen as a thumbnail...

I´ll make another try to make sure the prob is fixed...

Thanks a lot for trying !

Here is a new bridge I made today... again made with very fine (old) walnut with an overlay of Ebony... I like this combination.

The tracing is clear and simple, but the effect couldn´t be overseen.

I will use this bridge on the maple Oud... but soon I have to begin the rosette... hopefully I get a very fine template...

Greetings

Fritz

Yes... it looks more original...

Sometimes it is difficult do find the right matching design, when it is wanted to be a bit away from mainstream you know...

This design is from young palestinian instrument-maker who studyed in Germany and is now back to Palestine... he has a workshop there for reapiring and building instruments. I asked hin for using this design... We know us well and he had no prob with it.

faggiuols :)

In the moment the bridge is under pressure... with glue on the face of the Oud... I scratched both surfaces with a very fine japanese Nomi and applied glue on both pieces... and than the clamps...

I´ll see ... this top will be a very fine one ! I try to do the most possible to make an absolutely unique instrument...

Hi guys

I´ve seen the phaenomenal work of Samir, creating the fine rosette he assembled in his new walnut Oud. I asked him for a template, and he told me to make a request to AlFaraby... and I did... here is the result of his work... visualized to see, how it will look like in one of my new tops :

I think this will be an absolutely unique face for this Oud (made of the nice maple) and matches with the general look of the top, doesn´t it ?

Thanks to AlFaraby !!!
