I`m almost shure, when he starts playing oud, there where only right-handed ouds around, so he just played it like it was comfortable for him.
And if he learned like this, there is no reason to change anything.
The biggest advance- he can play 99% of ouds without changing strings or so.
Many left-handed guitarists play like this.
