Hi Nedal,

I don't know who I would recommend, since I'm personally not crazy about the sound of the Bashir-type floating bridge ouds, but I know both Maurice Shehata/Al-Aseel and Nazih Ghadban both make that type of instrument: http://www.mauriceoudshop.com/aseel-1959/ and http://www.oudnazihghadban.com/oud_details.php?&page=20 I have a standard model Shehata.

Good luck!

Hello Nedal,

here are two videolinks played on two different floating bridge models from me:

1) Raed Koshaba plays on a copy of his mohammed Fadhel model, the model of Munir Bashir:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9i9uvzpSoQ

2) Mohammed Abozekry plays on my own floating bridge model:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0QteZToEc4

I have 1 instrument of the Fadhel model in my workshop and furthermore another bigger Fadhel floating bridge model. You are welcome to visit me and try the instruments. The model under 1 was played by all members of Munir's group "Al Bayrak" and is still played by several well known oudists like Ali Hassan, Sami Nasseem and Marcel Khalife. I am actually working on a order of this model.

The pictures below show my own model.

Best regards

Matthias

Mood: Dude, where's my Oud?

[*] posted on 1-2-2015 at 02:57 PM

I just got a Faik Mohamad Fadel floating bridge Oud and I love the sound. Though, I'm amazed at how quiet it is compared to my Dimitris Rapakousious Oud. Actually, comparing my Dimitris Oud to other Ouds I've tried like Sukar and Ghadban, and Persian Barbats, my Dimitris Oud is a BEAST. However my floating bridge one is comparable to other Arabic Ouds in volume.

That being said, I wonder if all floating bridge Ouds are quieter in volume than fixed bridge Ouds? Nevertheless, I am in love with the sound of this Oud... I've always wanted a floating bridge Oud. My Dimitris Oud has a lot of overtones, which I have grown to tolerate, but this floating bridge Oud has a pretty quick decay, so I only hear the note I am playing. But the volume is lower.

Another question, my floating bridge Oud is about 58cm or 58.5cm string length. Is a shorter scale normal for floating bridge Ouds to compensate for the strings being tied beyond the bridge?

Yes, the whole intention of the floating bridge design is greater volume and power. However, to really take advantage of this you need higher tension strings.

If you use the lower tension strings typical of a classic fixed-bridge, you will not get the increased volume possible from a floating bridge, though you will get different tonal qualities than a fixed bridge (generally more overtones).

Depending on the design, an oud that is made for higher tension strings may actually be quieter with low tension strings than an oud that was designed for low tension. It's about using the instrument as it was designed.

Regarding the OP's question, I would recommend Khalid Belhaiba in Morocco. He only lists fixed-bridge ouds on his site but I have played his floating bridge ouds and they are excellent.

I am using La Bella high ff tuning. I do need a new set of strings though.

This floating bridge Oud I bought needs a bit of work. There is a minor separation between the soundboard and bowl on the side that rest on your leg. I need to have it repaired, so that might contribute to the lack of volume. This should tell you something about buying an Oud form ebay. lol.

The treble strings volume really stick out.

But my Dimitris Oud is seriously loud. Loudest Oud I've ever heard in person or played. I should see if there's an online decibel app so I can do a comparison.
